Volume 3, Number 1, 2022 La BD scientifique. Les nouveaux territoires du documentaire Science Comics: A New Frontier for Documentaries Guest-edited by Bettina Egger and Chris Reyns-Chikuma

Faced with the development of popular science comics, this article proposes to meet the authors of this new niche, their perceptions of these developments, and to distinguish different profiles of francophone authors. Based on an analysis of specific collections and titles and semi-directive interviews with several authors (Pochep, Héloïse Chochois, Martin PM, Emanuelle Dufour and Pierre Nocerino), the article looks in detail at three profiles: one-time popularizers, author-mediators and author-researchers. Once these profiles are described, a last part gathers feedbacks on the collaboration with scientists, showing similar ways of working and limits, with notably a paradoxical unthought on the scientific evaluation of the drawing and the graphic narration, nowadays almost absent in the feedbacks of the researchers' works adapted in comics.

In my article, I undertake basic research on comics and knowledge transfer by comparing scientific comics with other forms of visualization in (the history of) science. In doing so, I elaborate the central characteristics of comics in reference to current research, and relate them to philosophical theories of images by arguing that the specific materiality of the images in general, and in comics in particular, has received little attention so far. The central thesis is that materiality is decisive for images not only to illustrate scientific theories but to become knowledge-generating media themselves.

This article focuses on the analysis of a project based on the enhancement of the literary heritage using the Ninth Art authors’ work, which was ordered by the cultural agency ALCA (Agence Livre, Cinéma et Audiovisuel) in the Nouvelle Aquitaine Region. This project keeps working on enhancing strategies of the written heritage, which were developed by local libraries, by ALCA, DRAC (Nouvelle Aquitaine Management of cultural matters) and BNF (France National Library), and also aims at reflecting on discourses and narratives about the written heritage and more specifically about the literary one. Indeed, in a communication approach (Davallon, 2006), we can consider that heritage publicizing implies the transmission of an interpretative scheme (age, fragility, representativeness, etc) which allows everyone to acknowledge this specific object as part of a legacy. Consequently, we should question the representations conveyed by these comic strips; in other words, we should monitor the alterations of this “cultural being” (Jeanneret, 2014) that is to say : the literary heritage. In fine, we will ask ourselves to what extent this action can have an impact on the patrimonialising process of literature in a specific territory.

The 2015 publication of Nick Sousanis’s graphic dissertation, Unflattening, opened doors for artist-scholars who challenge conventional research methodologies by producing graphic dissertations, graphic research, and comics-based publications in academic, scientific, and medical journals. Unflattening came out one year after I began a PhD program in cultural studies at the University of California, Davis, with a proposed graphic dissertation of my own. In this essay, I will discuss how my intended project, a graphic narrative about my maternal grandmother and her experiences of the Second World War in Germany, became a graphic memoir—an intersectional feminist Bildungsroman that explores themes of transgenerational memory, displacement, and childhood sexual abuse. As an astute scholar in my cohort put it, “You’ve found a new way of ‘doing’ psychology and history.” How is the very particular kind of subjectivity, a seeing from the ground up, or from a “snail’s eye view,” engendered by the comics form, useful for contemporary decolonial scholarship? In addition to writing about my graphic memoir, Queen of Snails (forthcoming by Graphic Mundi, an imprint of Penn State University Press in 2022), I will interview Kay Sohini, a PhD candidate at Stonybrook, about Unbelonging, her graphic dissertation in progress, Helen Blejerman (Lulu La Sensationelle, Presque Lune Editions, 2014), and Sarah Lightman (Book of Sarah, Myriad Press and Penn State University Press, 2021). How has the process of creating their graphic narratives changed their approaches to research? What have they learned by employing drawing and writing in crafting works that include autobiographical elements? How might some of these processes be useful to scholars seeking to unpack intersectional issues of transgenerational trauma, misogyny, and racism?

Through these 12 “footnotes” I try to show how the author Bharath Murthy has been able to develop a "scientific" comic strip, here more concretely a philosophical one, on the presence-absence of an essence called "soul" (or "self", "self", "god", etc.) in the Western tradition and reaffirmed in AI by some, and deconstructed by the Buddhist aporetic "emptiness", using the specific techniques of comics provided by the text and the image (from bleed to graphiation).

This article examines the relationship between crime fiction and children’s literature based on the novel Rapt à Bamako by Alpha-Mandé Diarra and Marie Florence Ehret. It aims more specifically to show how this novel takes up certain themes frequently exploited in the field of children’s literature. We hypothesize that Rapt à Bamako is built on the one hand, around themes and ideas mainly centered on the relationship between literature and society, and, on the other hand, on the search for aesthetic or narrative mechanisms to account for of the life of beings and things in contemporary Africa. The novel uses a series of narrative strategies aimed at revealing the tensions between rational inquiry and supernatural thought. It thus presents the particularity of introducing the reader into a universe that is above all political and into the Malian social imagination where the conception of the world includes, for a good part of the population, both the visible and invisible world.

The postcolonial phenomenon of cultural hybridization between France and the Maghreb has changed the discourse on national integration. Taking part in the contemporary debates around political issues of young people of North African origin in France, the work of Souâd Belhaddad opens up fertile avenues of reflection on female identity at the crossroads of cultures and generations. The discursive manipulations deployed in the autobiographical narrative offer perspectives that overthrow the very foundation of hegemonic thoughts, structures of domination, and racist paradigms internalized not only by the French society, but also and above all by the Maghreb community which reproduces within the family circle the oppression they experience outside. Mechanisms of resistance to these forms of alienation suggest a new vision of the place occupied by women in the Franco-Maghreb mix and though literature.
