Abstract
This paper talks about the traditional puppetry genres of "toy theatre" or "paper theatre" within a broader context of the rediscovery of the miniature on avant-Garde and experimental stages via consideration of Walter Benjamin’s notion of the mimetic faculty and the capacity of children to play using this inherent ability. It interrogates a particular confluence between the "post-dramatic" atmosphere of much contemporary performance, the object-centered work of the folk or amateur genre of toy/paper theatre in the West, and the new proliferation of contemporary performance spaces either incorporating models or miniature landscapes. Finally, the paper argues that new forms of model theatre share aspects of traditional puppetry genres with particular respect to how human performers and inanimate elements interact.
