Relais et chaînes redistributives dans trois systèmes d'échanges cérémoniels mélanésiens

Dans bon nombre de systèmes d'échanges cérémoniels mélanésiens, les échanges dyadiques sont articulés les uns aux autres par des relais qui se combinent de manière redistributive : après avoir transmis x de X à Y, R transmet y de Y à X. On analyse ici trois systèmes (kula, tee et umalu) composés de chaînes de partenaires plus ou moins longues, où aucun bien ne peut être retourné à son donateur initial et où chaque participant appartient en général à plusieurs chaînes différentes ; sur celles-ci, R doit transmettre à Y un bien de valeur égale à celle du bien qu'il a reçu de X, si ce n'est ce bien lui-même, et la contre-prestation doit passer par les mêmes intermédiaires que la prestation. On examine en conclusion les rapports entre chaînes redistributives, échange généralisé de type discontinu (Lévi-Strauss) et redistribution (Polanyi).

Chains of Partners, Redistribution and Discontinuous Generalized Exchange

In Melanesia, exchanges very often occur by means of intermediaries or middlemen : an item x circulâtes from X to Y and from Y to Z, an item y circulâtes from Z to Y an'd from Y to X. Three Systems of cérémonial exchanges are analyzed in this paper : kula, tee and umalu. In each case, chains of three partners or more are characteri/ed by the following set of rules : (a) a man participâtes in several chains, (b) an item should never be returned to its first donor, (c) Y must gi ve to Z the item he receives from X or an item of similar value, (d) the gift and the return gift follow the same path, in reverse order. Some différences and similarities between such chains of partners, redistribution (Polanyi) and discontinuous generalized exchange (Lévi-Strauss) are examined.
