Abstract
Local initiatives seeking to limit the environmental impact of human activities have grown by leaps and bounds. The following portrayal of the City of Munich describes how its citizens have innovatingly taken advantage of their geographic location and their passion for organic farming in order to develop an environmentally friendly food production system in fresh water. The City offers financial compensation to farmers located within a catchment area of its potable water for its reconversion into organic farming. To achieve this end, Munich has founded its approach on community law upon which it has created a contractual framework. The standard form contract that it submits to farmers requires that they become members of an organic farming association. Farmers under contract are thereby bound by two obligations : namely by having contracted with the potable water distributor and by their contractual commitment to the organic farming association. Hereunder, the author analyzes the content of these overlapping obligations.
