Résumé
Au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le philosophe et essayiste André Dagenais se révèle un penseur traditionaliste vigoureux et dérangeant. D'inspiration scotiste, il bouscule les habitudes thomistes au sein de sa famille de pensée, la droite catholique et nationaliste. Quant à ses adversaires libéraux et progressistes, ils le tournent en dérision lorsqu'ils daignent s'en occuper. Le mutisme des philosophes et des théologiens à son endroit est rarement rompu. Le professorat dans un collège ou à l'université lui est interdit. Père de famille, il est forcé de se faire journaliste ou libraire, et de s'éloigner des siens. À travers la précarité, il réussit à rester fidèle à sa vocation d'intellectuel : non pas primum vivere, deinde philosophari, mais vivere et simul philosophari. Il mène de front l'offensive antithomiste et le combat national. Ardent promoteur du pluralisme chrétien, il croit que le second concile du Vatican sonne l'heure du triomphe. Mais la Révolution tranquille enclenche une dynamique qui aboutit au pluralisme laïque, soit hostile, soit indifférent à la pensée chrétienne. Paradoxalement il réussit enfin, à ce moment, à intégrer les cadres de l'enseignement collégial. Éternel marginal du monde intellectuel québécois, il cherche à opérer une sorte de dépassement-synthèse de la modernité, à la fois théoriquement, par la triadologie, et pratiquement, par le triadisme. Resplendirait alors une Cité nouvelle, temple de la Trinité, communauté des personnes et maison de Laurentie. Envers et contre tous, André Dagenais a maintenu l'honneur de penser en homme libre.
Abstract
Just after the Second World War, the philosopher and essayist André Dagenais shows himself to be a vigorous and disturbing traditionalistic thinker. Scotist-inspired, he disrupts the Thomist customs in his school of thought, the Catholic and nationalist right. As for his liberal and progressist adversaries, they ridicule him when they deign to take notice of him. This silence of philosophers and theologians is but rarely interrupted. A college or university professorship is forbidden him. With a family to support, he is forced into journalism or bookselling and has to travel far from his own. Through precarity, he remains faithful to his vocation as an intellectual: not primum vivere, deinde philosophari, but vivere et simul philosophari. He manages both the anti-Thomist offensive and the national struggle at once. An ardent promoter of Christian pluralism, he believes that Vatican II is a triumph. But the Quiet Revolution unleashes a dynamic that leads to lay pluralism, which is either hostile or indifferent to Christian thought. Paradoxically, it is at this time that he finally succeeds in joining the ranks of college professors. Eternally at the fringes of the Québécois intellectual world, he seeks to implement a kind of redemption synthesis of modernity both theoretically through triadology and practically through triadism. A new civil society would then shine, a temple of the Trinity, a community of persons in the house of Laurentia. In the face of all opposition, André Dagenais maintained the honour of the free thinker.
