Abstract
This paper seeks to establish the poetics of food in Gabrielle Roy’s Bonheur d’occasion (The Tin Flute). The author analyses the principal scenes where food has a semiotic function according to the following typology: (1) food sign; (2) place; (3) character; (4) communicative function. The culinary discourse generates social and mythical meanings which are governed by one principal structure, i.e. opposition. By establishing a series of contrasts and incompatibilities, this structure reveals the gaps and inequalities which underlie the economic and symbolic systems of the novel.
