The social differenciation of space in Sherbrooke (Québec) a medium sized city, has been studied by using the classical techniques of factor analysis. The results demonstrate the interest of oblique factor analysis as opposed to factor analysis utilizing principal componants. The relationships between social areas and criminal acts are analyzed.

Maps of residential desirability and information surfaces in Québec and Ontario vary consider-ably between children and young adults in the two provinces. Such differences reflect variations in migration, education and economic factors. Difficult methodological questions are raised concerning the measurement of cultural and linguistic barrier effects.

Circum-Caribbean nations are experiencing the fastest urban growth rate in the world. If investigation of city size distribution can be of any relevance to national development policy, chances are that it will be the most useful where the urban hierarchy is still taking shape. Three types of cities Systems are identified: « Extreme Primate », « Moderate Primate » and « Lognormal ». These urban structures variations through time and space are commented upon as being related to such factors as: a varying number of cities; peculiar political or historical conditions; the impact of an international function on the capital city; and the influence of the physical environment.

Until the end of the fifties, the techniques of wet rice cultivation in Southeast Asia remained relatively autonomous, owing little to industrial technology. With the green revolution has been accelerated the submission of rice agriculture and of rice producers to industrial interests, particularly through the use of chemical fertilizers. During nearly twenty years, the bulk of these fertilizers used by Malaysian and Indonesian rice peasants has been imported from industrial countries. Following sharp price increases in the middle of the seventies, local fertilizer production was raised significantly, in Indonesia to the extent of assuring actual self-sufficiency. The examination of the conditions of this evolution allows the identification of a set of successive stages. 1) Along with the decline of intra regional trade, the commercial dependency at the hands of the fertilizer producing industrial countries increases. 2) The increasingly expensive needs thus created must then be met by local production. 3) Highly capital-intensive, such an industry cannot be established without massive external aid: thus is Consolidated financial and technological dependency. 4) The ultimate and final stage is reached: the unequal exchange, now occurring directly between local foreign-controlled industry and the padi fields, insures more solidly the capture of peasant labour.

The history of settlement of Anticosti Island, located in the northern part of the Gulf of St.Lawrence, is still partly unknown. However, we have identified six periods in the development of the area.

Permanent colonization arrived late due to physical factors (isolation, nordicity, reef), perceptual factors (terror to sailors, negative economic evaluation) and political factors (tenure, overcontrol, French/English opposition). On the whole, the total number of inhabitants has varied from a mere few hundreds to thousands.

Three main settlement regions: series of isolated peripherical sites (as Fox Bay), the west Front (Strawberry Cove, English Bay) and the capital, Port-Menier (on Ellis Bay) which alone retain now 85% of the total population. Interior of the Island, except for the Jupiter Basin, was opened to large scale exploitation after the middle of this century.

The Mingan archipelago, a territory of the Gulf of St.Lawrence, constitutes an historical heritage of great value in Québec. This natural environment combines several out-standing features: Ordovician limestone cuestas, remarkable shore platforms and cliffs, subarctic endemic vegetation and very active bird life, etc. The recent construction of the highway 138 has threatened this territory. In order to insure a better protection of its resources the author suggests that a conservation park be created.

This paper presents the argument that in a politically fragmented agglomeration there is spatial segregation of the resources and needs related to public service provision and that this can be reduced by local government amalgamations. It also reports the findings of a study of the Montréal metropolitan area in which ways of measuring the impact of fragmentation were devised and applied. The results of this study indicate that municipal amalgamations can lead to a more equitable distribution of tax base resources.
