L’Empire et les barbares

Résumé

Le fait québécois est analysé ici par rapport aux systèmes de représentation de l’Amérique et de la France : le modèle horizontal de l’appartenance au continent et le modèle vertical hiérarchique. Étant donné que le Québec entretient un rapport problématique avec les Etats-Unis, considéré comme le pays de l’étrangeté, et un rapport de continuité et de tradition avec la France, l’auteur démontre que le système de représentation québécois se constitue entre deux pôles inaccessibles, tension qui est le moteur même de sa survie.

Abstract

The situation of Quebec is analysed from the point of view of the systems of representation used in America and in France — the horizontal mode of continental attachment versus the vertical, hierarchical model. Given that Quebec maintains a problematic relationship with the United States, considered as a land of great strangeness, and has a relationship of continuity and tradition with France, the author shows that the Québécois system of representation is constitued between two unattainable poles, producing a tension that is the motor of its very survival.
