Le speaking pianist est un genre musical qui ne cesse d’interroger la relation que l’interprète entretient avec la musique pure, de même que la représentation du musicien sur scène et de ce qu’il projette de lui-même et des oeuvres sur le public. Si, comme l’écrivait Artur Schnabel, la musique est un art solitaire que l’on peut pratiquer dans sa chambre, il n’en va plus de même pour cet art hybride qui intègre le texte parlé et met l’interprète face à de nouveaux défis en revenant pourtant à la tradition très ancienne du troubadour. Cet article convie à l’exploration d’un répertoire contemporain hors des sentiers battus au travers d’oeuvres de Frederic Rzewski, André Ristic et Alec Hall.

Abstract

The speaking pianist is a musical genre which interrogates the performer’s relationship to music itself, as well as the representation of the musician on stage and the projection of himself or herself and of the works to the audience. If, as Artur Schnabel wrote, music is a solitary art that can be practiced in one’s room, the same cannot be said of this hybrid artform which integrates spoken text and confronts the performer with new challenges even as it recalls the ancient tradition of the troubadour. This article invites us to explore a contemporary repertoire off the beaten path through the works of Frederic Rzewski, André Ristic and Alec Hall.
