De la New Left à la Fake Left : les Cultural Studies et la crise de la réalité

Résumé

Cet article a pour intention de saisir l’évolution des Cultural Studies dans le contexte des transformations structurelles qui affectent les sociétés capitalistes avancées dans le cadre du passage de la modernité vers la postmodernité. Nous verrons que l’intention initiale des Cultural Studies visait à poser les bases d’une théorie sociologique qui trouvait son expression politique dans le socialisme démocratique. S’opposant à la fois à l’économicisme, au positivisme et à l’utilitarisme qui étaient partagés autant par le marxisme vulgaire que par le libéralisme, le matérialisme culturel des fondateurs des Cultural Studies a cherché dans la culture populaire un ensemble de traditions qui s’opposaient à la logique universaliste abstraite du capitalisme industriel et qui pourraient établir les fondements normatifs d’une société socialiste à venir. Par la suite, en branchant le marxisme structuraliste althussérien sur la French Theory, les théoriciens des Cultural Studies se feront les principaux protagonistes de la politique des identités et de la guerre culturelle qui sévira aux États-Unis à partir des années 1980. Nous soutenons que le tournant postmoderne des Cultural Studies participe d’une crise générale des modalités de reproduction des sociétés capitalistes avancées qu’on peut qualifier de crise de la réalité. Cette crise se manifeste notamment dans le conflit qui oppose une droite postmoderne, la Alt-right, à la Fake Left, une gauche de la simulation, qui s’exprime notamment dans les médias sociaux et sur les campus universitaires.

Abstract

This article intends to grasp the evolution of Cultural Studies in the context of the structural transformations that affect advanced capitalist societies in the framework of the transition from modernity to postmodernity. We will see that the initial intention of Cultural Studies was to lay the foundations of a sociological theory which found its political expression in democratic socialism. Opposing the economicism, positivism and utilitarianism that were shared as much by vulgar Marxism as by liberalism, the cultural materialism of Cultural Studies founders sought in popular culture a set of traditions that opposed the abstract universalist logic of industrial capitalism and which could establish the normative foundations for a future socialist society. Subsequently, by connecting Althusserian structuralist Marxism to French Theory, Cultural Studies theorists would become the main protagonists of the politics of identities and of the cultural war that raged in the United States as of the 1980s. We argue that postmodern cultural studies are part of a general crisis in the modes of reproduction of advanced capitalist societies that can be described as a crisis of reality. This crisis manifests itself in the conflict which opposes a post-modern right, the Alt-Right, to the Fake Left, a left of the simulation, which expresses itself in social media and on university campuses.
