Le recrutement et la formation du clergé diocésain de l’archidiocèse d’Ottawa 1947-1997. Avant et après Vatican II

Résumé

Cet essai retrace l’évolution des effectifs du clergé diocésain de l’archidiocèse d’Ottawa de 1947 à 1997, de leur origine et de la préoccupation de la relève. Il traite aussi de la formation du clergé: les institutions, les maîtres et le style de l’éducation donnée. De l’avant à l’après du Concile Vatican II étudié sur l’arrière plan de l’évolution globale dans le monde et l’Église durant ces cinquante dernières années, on note une diminution importante du clergé, mais en revanche une plus grande participation des baptisés de foi adulte à la mission de l’Église devenue pèlerine et plus soucieuse de communion que d’apologétique et d’affirmation de son statut hiérarchique. Les institutions et les formateurs de l’archidiocèse se regroupent à l’Université Saint-Paul après 1964. Les enseignements du Concile pénètrent peu à peu la façon de se préparer aux divers ministères en esprit de coresponsabilité des prêtres et des laïcs, hommes et femmes.

Abstract

This essay studies the numbers of the R.C. clergy of the Archdiocese of Ottawa from 1947 to 1997, their origin, their recruitment. It also addresses their education: the institutions, the teaching staff, the philosophy of education. During the two periods, before and after Vatican II, that are examined in light of the overall social and Church evolution of the last fifty years, one notices on the one hand the marked decrease in numbers of the clergy, but on the other the increase of Christian adults more aware of their baptismal call to participate in the Church's mission, as the latter sees herself as pilgrim and concerned more with communion than with apologetics and the hierarchical status of the clerics. Diocesan institutions and teaching staff merge their educational resources with St. Paul University after 1964. The teachings of the Council influence gradually the way ordained ministers ate educated side by side with the laity, men and women, in awareness of their coresponsibility in the Church and in the world.
