Catholicisme social, anticommunisme et nationalisme en Ontario français : le cas de figure du père Gustave Sauvé, o.m.i. (1930-1960)

Résumé

Cet article propose d’analyser l’itinéraire intellectuel et professionnel du père Gustave Sauvé o.m.i., lequel fut, entre 1930 et 1950, l’un des principaux publicistes chrétiens de l’Ontario français. Fondateur puis directeur d’une école d’Action catholique à l’Université d’Ottawa, figure d’avant-scène de la mouvance anti-communiste canadienne et directeur du Secrétariat de l’Association canadienne-française d’éducation de l’Ontario de 1944 à 1961, le père Sauvé constitue un cas d’étude privilégié pour mieux comprendre l’insertion, jusqu’ici peu étudiée, du catholicisme social en milieu francophone minoritaire. De même, l’action militante de cet oblat nous porte au coeur des mutations propres au catholicisme canadien-français d’avant 1960, plus particulièrement en ce qui a trait aux rapports évolutifs entre catholicisme et nationalisme, devenus facteurs de discorde durant l’entre-deux guerres. Sur ce point, cet article entend montrer que Sauvé, tout engagé qu’il fut envers sa mission apostolique, ne s’est jamais pour autant éloigné d’une exigence de combat national pour la survivance française en Ontario, inscrivant ainsi son action dans la mouvance du nationalisme groulxiste.

Abstract

This article offers an analysis of the intellectual and professional journey of Father Gustave Sauvé, o.m.i., who was one of the main Christian publicists in French Ontario between 1930 and 1950. He was the founder and director of an Action catholique school at the University of Ottawa, a prominent figure of the Canadian anti-communist movement, as well as a director of the secretarial office of the Association canadienne-française d’éducation de l’Ontario from 1944 to 1961. As such, Father Sauvé constitutes a unique case study to better understand the insertion of social Catholicism in Francophone minority communities. Similarly, the militant action of this Oblate takes us to the heart of mutations specific to pre 1960 French-Canadian Catholicism, especially those relating to the changing relationship between Catholicism and nationalism, which became a divisive factor during the interwar period. This article therefore intends to show that Sauvé, as commited as he was to his apostolic mission, never diverted from his involvement in a national struggle for French survival in Ontario, in keeping with the groulxiste nationalist movement.
