Native Guard, de Natasha Trethewey : écrire un pan oublié de l’histoire noire-américaine

Résumé

Dans Native Guard, Natasha Trethewey (née en 1966) dépeint la Guerre de Sécession depuis le point de vue d’esclaves affranchis et enrôlés dans l’armée de l’Union, de manière à interroger la nature de cette liberté nouvelle, qui n’efface aucunement les préjudices anciens et reflète les rapports de domination tels qu’ils existent encore aux États-Unis. Elle emploie pour ce faire une version assouplie de la couronne de sonnets, ce qui lui permet de constituer une trame narrative rassemblant des fragments subjectifs, tout en s’appropriant un héritage mixte, à la fois spécifiquement noir et résolument nord-américain.

Abstract

In Native Guard, Natasha Trethewey (born 1966) depicts the American Civil War from the point of view of emancipated slaves fighting for the Union. She thus questions this new freedom, which does not cancel old prejudice and perpetuates a domination inherited from slavery and still ongoing nowadays in the United States. The Black poet uses a flexible sonnet crown, a form which provides a narrative progression constituted of subjective fragments while claiming the European form of the sonnet in order to explore a shared past, both specifically Black and resolutely American.
