Abstract
Musical associations (harmonies, fanfares, brass-bands) heve been in existence in Magog and in the Eastern Townships since 1930. The following article analyses the individual and collective identities expressed as well as the various strategies of social integration within these associations. The ritualistic practices and customs of the musical associations of Magog demonstrate a need for formal sociability. Also, the author shows how the public manifestations of these groups have affected the musical and cultural traditions of a small town in rural Quebec.
