Abstract
Mohamadou Kane was a strong supporter of the thesis of the specificity of African literature. His first works were devoted to the African folk tale, which he defined both as traditional oral tale and written modern folk tale. His main contribution was to establish that the sources of the African novel can be found in the African story-telling tradition. He accomplished this by identifying traditional story-telling forms in the novel and by carrying out a wider study of traditional models and their relationship to the African novel. He also laid down the basis for a true African literary history.
