Vers une relecture de l’héritage littéraire yiddish montréalais

Résumé

La littérature yiddish de Montréal est restée jusqu’à récemment un livre fermé aux regards extérieurs à la communauté. Peu de non-Juifs ont pu acquérir une connaissance suffisante du yiddish pour lire des textes écrits dans cette langue, peu connus de toute manière en dehors du cercle ­restreint des yiddishophones. La traduction récente en français de trois mémorialistes (Israël Medresh, Simon Belkin et Hirsch Wolofsky) appartenant à la période de la grande migration est-européenne a renversé ces perspectives et a permis de mieux comprendre le contexte d’émergence de la littérature yiddish à Montréal. Cet article propose des réflexions sur cette contribution originale et très peu étudiée des Juifs de langue yiddish à la littérature québécoise.

Abstract

Until recently, Montreal yiddish literature had remained unaccessible to readers from outside the Jewish community. This stemmed largely from the fact that few non-Jews had been able to gain a working knowledge of the language. Outside the Yiddish speaking circles, very little had filtered about the existence of these works. The translation in French, in the last few years, of the memoirs of three prominent East-European immigrants established in Montreal in the period of the great ­migration (Israël Medresh, Simon Belkin and Hirsch Wolofsky), has done a lot to reverse these perceptions and to explain the context into which this literature has emerged in Montreal. The present article proposes some reflexions on this little known and very original contribution to the literature of Quebec.
