AB - The voice of drama characters often inspires theatre scholars interpretations that are more fantasmatic than plainly descriptive. By examining the possibility of a history of the dramatic voices (as a motif in literature or as produced on stage), and by investigating the feasibility of different comparative analysis of recorded or imagined performances, this article aims at giving to the vocal craftsmanship of actors a more objective existence through its integration to the broad field of literary studies. Finally, the article proposes, as the most adequate, a method of comparison highlighting the differences between performances of the same character played by different actors.
