Abstract
The reception of Saint-Amant’s poetry would appear to rest on a paradox : it is said to be fantastic, jumbled, and burlesque, and at the same time its power of depiction has been much vaunted. His poems seem to afford the reader an entirely new way of viewing the world, even when they are at the furthest possible remove from it. The illusion of reality takes form through such factors as the competence of the reader, the peculiar status accorded the voice of the narrator or the poet, and the polyphonic richness of interwoven styles. Altogether, it is as though the circumventions into the realm of the unheard-of made it possible to perceive the grain of the world, somewhat after the fashion of anamorphosis.
