AB - The work of Maeterlinck (1862-1949) clashes with the notion of irreversibility in both his first and second theatres. This article looks at this existential paradox, as defined by Jankélévitch, and analyses the resistance against this concept in the Ghent playwright’s theatre. Shifting from a theatre of loss to a theatre of deliverance, the work of Maeterlinck constantly seeks to find an answer to this fatality that requires man to be “entirely irreversible”.
