Abstract
From Fragiles lumières de la terre to La détresse et l’enchantement, a diachronic, narratological study of twenty-five descriptions of villages in Gabrielle Roy’s writings addresses the positioning of the descriptive segments and such operations as “schematization”, “aspectualisation” and spatial contextualisation, to reveal a system which presents the village as the object of a quest, literal and allegorical. In the course of a rhetorical journey from Iberville to Encinitas and finally Upshire, the latter emerges as the Royan village par excellence, withdrawn and yet open to the outside world – both a nest and a look-out.
