Abstract
One of the key figures of the ideological currents that have stirred the province of Saskatchewan since 1920 is former school inspector James Thomas Milton Anderson, who was close to the extremist Christian fellowship movement, the Ku Klux Klan. Anderson, who became Premier in 1929, set out to “canadianise” immigrants settling in the province, and had the School Act amended to ban teaching in any language but English. In this context, this study seeks to question the journalistic discourse of the Patriote de l’Ouest, used by the French-Canadian community of Saskatchewan as a tool for protest. We also examine how the conflict between Anglophones and Francophones for the survival of French schools impacted Les pages écolières, a section of the same newspaper led by Tante Présentine, an influential nun among the youth.
