AB - This article aims to elicit a reflection on the concept of recognition and the realities that it proposes to translate. It is argued that recognition distorts many of the struggles of minority groups by removing the question of power that resides in the heart of their actions and claims. The notion of empowerment in turn allows for a new focus on the issue of power as it refers to the practice by individuals and communities of seeking greater control over the dimensions of their existence which they consider sensitive. The argument of this study is based on the specific case of the French Canadian minority.
