AB - In September 1859, while François-Xavier Garneau has just published the third edition of his Histoire du Canada, publisher John Lovell announces the forthcoming translation of the work, to be made by the editor of Montreal’s Pilot, Andrew Bell. But while Garneau hoped for a faithful translation of its work, the translation published by Bell in 1860 looks more like a somewhat free adaptation. In this article, we look more closely at the gap existing between the original work and its translation on the question of where lies the legitimacy of the political power in Lower Canada, not only by observing the differences between the two versions of the Histoire du Canada, but also by trying to explain these differences under the light of Bell and Garneau’s experiences and political thoughts as well as of the horizons of expectation they were facing.
