Abstract
There are few studies on the economic, demographic and social characteristics of Alberta’s Francophone populations during the early 20th century, even though they constituted at the time the third largest ethnolinguistic group in the province. This article examines the Francophone experience in Alberta during the Pre-War era period by using microdata from the Canadian Census of 1911. By focusing on the components that shaped Francophone identity (French Canadians, Métis, Acadians and Europeans) and the processes of linguistic reproduction and assimilation, this paper aims to offer a renewed socio-historical analysis of Alberta, power, language and capital.
