Abstract
Suicidality among trans youth is a crucial topic. The literature has demonstrated that a supportive social context, strong parental support and access to gender-affirming medical care are strong protective factors to prevention of suicidality. But what are the experiences of trans youth and their families in contexts of limited access to gender-affirming care, or in cultures where trans people remain invisible, for example, in French-speaking Switzerland? In a participatory study supported by grounded theory, 10 youth and 10 parents were interviewed to document their experiences. Suicide and suicidal ideation are common among youth experiences, and the current maladapted healthcare system is identified as an important factor leading to these experiences of suicidality. For trans youth, coming out to themselves and to others and being supported by caregivers are fundamental for overcoming suicidality. This article explains how the concept of developmental oppression is helpful for understanding suicidality in trans youth.
