Cet article vise à identifier la place que peut prendre le religieux dans le cadre d’une société laïque, mais d’un point de vue non confessionnel. Nous nous appuyons en partie sur l’analyse de la religion faite par Hermann Cohen (1842-1918) dans son oeuvre tardive. Au Québec, la sécularisation semble avoir relégué aux calendes grecques non seulement la religion catholique telle que pratiquée à l’époque d’avant la Révolution tranquille, mais aussi le religieux au sens large. Qu’avons-nous perdu, avec ce rejet du phénomène religieux, en ce qui a trait aux dimensions éthiques et communautaires de notre société? Est-il possible (et souhaitable) de considérer un retour du religieux qui puisse inclure les différentes communautés culturelles du Québec moderne sans pour autant compromettre la laïcité des institutions de ce dernier?

Abstract

This article aims to identify the place that the religious can take in the framework of a secular society. It seeks to do so from a non-confessional point of view, based in part on Hermann Cohen's (1842-1918) analysis of religion in his late work. In Québec, secularization seems to have postponed indefinitely not only the Catholic religion as it was practiced in the period before the Quiet Revolution, but also the religious in a greater sense. With this rejection of the religious phenomenon, what ethical and community-based elements of our society have we lost? Is it possible (and desirable) to consider a return of the religious that could include the different cultural communities of modern Québec without compromising the secularity of its institutions?
