RÉSUMÉ

Les résultats de l'étude palynologique de 5 concrétions de grottes de Belgique sont comparés avec 15 analyses ¹⁴C. Cette comparaison montre que la correction des âges ¹⁴C apparents avec un facteur de dilution q = 0,85 fournit une très bonne concordance avec les âges déterminés sur base des successions des groupements végétaux. Au sein de la séquence pollinique couvrant la totalité de l'Holocène, une excellente concordance entre la palynologie et les datations ¹⁴C corrigées a été obtenue pour les phases d'évolution de la végétation suivantes : transition Préboréal-Boréal, début et fin de l'Atlantique, extension C III de Corylus au Subboréal et extension F III de Fagus au Subatlantique. L'extension de Tilia coïncide avec le début de l'Atlantique et peut se poursuivre jusqu'au Subatlantique. Cette nouvelle méthode indirecte d'estimation de l'activité ¹⁴C initiale (A₀) des concrétions conduit à proposer l'adoption provisoire de A₀ = 85 ± 5 % de « carbone moderne » pour la correction des âges ¹⁴C apparents des concrétions stalagmitiques développées durant l'Holocène en Belgique. Trois datations ²³⁰Th/²³⁴U ont en outre été réalisées pour comparaison et relais avec les datations ¹⁴C.

ABSTRACT

Pollen assemblages in 5 speleothems from Belgian caves have been compared with 15 radiocarbon age determinations. Uncorrected apparent ¹⁴C ages from speleothems (as well as from groundwaters and calcareous tufa) must be corrected to take into account the dilution resulting from dissolution of limestone bedrock essentially free of ¹⁴C. Comparison between the characteristic floral assemblages (covering all of the Holocene) and ¹⁴C data shows that the best fit between the two methods is achieved if apparent ¹⁴C ages are corrected with a bedrock carbonate dilution factor q = 0.85. The following well dated subdivisions of the Holocene show a very good agreement between pollen assemblages and corrected ¹⁴C ages in the studied samples: Preboreal-Boreal transition, begin and end of Atlantic, Corylus extension (C III) during Subboreal and Fagus extension (F III) during Subatlantic. The Tilia extension takes place at the beginning of the Atlantic and may locally continue up to the Subatlantic. This comparison can be considered as a new indirect estimation method for the initial ¹⁴C activity in speleothems, and we propose to adopt tentatively the value A₀ = 85 ± 5 % of "modern carbon" for dating Holocene calcium carbonate cave deposits in the studied area. In addition, three uranium-series analyses have been carried out to compare with ¹⁴C data.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG

Pollenspektren aus 5 Tropsteinen von belgischen Hôhlen wurden mit ¹⁴C- Altersbestimmungen verglichen. Konventionnelle ¹⁴C- Altersbestimmungen aus Tropsteinen sowie aus Grundwasser und Kalksinter miissen aufgrund eines Verdiinnungsfaktors, der aus der Lôsung des ¹⁴C-freien Ausgangskalksteins stammt, verbessert werden. Der Vergleich von holozânen durchgehenden Pollendiagrammen und ¹⁴C-AItersbestimmungen durch einen Verdùnnungsfaktor der Ausgangs-karbonate von q = 0,85 verbessert worden ist. Die Ergebnisse von ¹⁴C-Altersbestimmungen sowie Pollendiagrammen stimmen mit den folgenden gut datierten Wenden der Unterteilungen des Holozàns ùberein: Pràboreal/Boreal Wende, Beginn und Ende des Atlantikums, subboreale Verbreitung von Corylus (C III) und subatlantische Verbreitung von Fagus (F III). Tilia-Verbreitung hat am Beginn des Atlantikums stattgefunden und hat sich kleinraùmig bis ins Subatlantikum fortgesetzt. Dieser Vergleich fùhrt zu einer indirekten Bestimmungsmethode von ¹⁴C-Aktivitât in Kalksintern. Daher wird vorgeschlagen, dap der wert A₀ = 85 ± 5% von "modemem Karbon" zur Datierung der holozânen Kalksinter zur Zeit benutzt wird. Darùber wurden drei ²³⁰Th/²³⁴U Datierungen zur Verbindung mit ¹⁴C-Daten durchgefùhrt.
