RÉSUMÉ
Les îles et le pourtour du lac à l'Eau Claire (56°15'N, 74°30'O) montrent d'importantes différences au niveau de la structure et de la superficie occupée par les formations conifériennes. D'une île à l'autre, le pourcentage de recouvrement réel des conifères et des arboraies varie respectivement entre 10 et 35 % et 3 et 35 %. Cette végétation contraste avec les lichénaies situées au sommet des collines, où l'on trouve sous le couvert végétal des charbons d'épinette noire (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP.), vestiges de formations conifériennes autrefois plus étendues. Une analyse des datations au radiocarbone de charbons de bois révèle que les îles centrales du lac à l'Eau Claire subissent une deforestation depuis au moins 2350 BP. En conjonction avec le climat, les feux ont profondément influencé la dynamique spatio-temporelle des formations conifériennes. Les îles centrales du lac à l'Eau Claire ont toutes connu une histoire des feux différente et, par conséquent, une deforestation variable. Cinq périodes d'ouverture du paysage ont été identifiées, soit 2350-2100,1650-1450, 1350-1050, 850-650 et 400-200 BP. Par ailleurs, on évalue à environ 5 % des deux plus grandes îles (Atkinson et Lepage) la surface déboisée par les feux de 400 BP; de plus, un feu d'il y a environ 200 ans a détruit 4 % de la surface boisée de l'île Atkinson. On en conclut que la faible représentation des conifères dans certaines îles du lac à l'Eau Claire illustre leurs difficultés d'établissement après feu. À l'inverse, leur présence dans les sites exposés souligne leur capacité de maintien en l'absence de perturbation majeure.
ABSTRACT
Very contrasted differences in type and coverage of coniferous vegetation are found on the islands and surroundings of Lac à l'Eau Claire (56°15'N, 74°30'W). The effective coverage of conifers and tree stands on the central islands varies respectively between 10 and 35 %, and 3 and 35 %. This vegetation differs markedly from lichenic communities extending on upland sites where spruce charcoal (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP.) is found beneath the organic mat, suggesting that coniferous vegetation was more extensive in the past. An analysis of charcoal 14C dates indicated that deforestation occurred at least since 2350 BP. In close association with climate, past fires influenced deeply the spatio-temporal dynamics of coniferous stands. Each island has been characterized by a particular fire history, and consequently different deforestation events. Five periods of deforestation were identified, i.e. 2350-2100, 1650-1450, 1350-1050, 850-650 and 400-200 BP. About 5 % of the surface of the two largest islands (Atkinson and Lepage) were deforested by 400 BP fires. Additionally, a 200 years old fire deforested about 4 % of île Atkinson. It is concluded that the rather small coniferous cover on several islands is the result of problems in postfire establishment. Inversely, distribution of conifers in exposed sites emphasizes their ability to survive in absence of major disturbance.
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG
Die lnseln und der Umkreis des Lac à l'Eau Claire (56°15'N, 74°30' O) weisen wichtige Unterschiede in Struktur und Ausdehnung der Nadelbaum-Vegetation auf. Von einer Insel zur anderen variiert der Anteil der tatsâchlichen Nadelbaum- und Baumbedeckung zwischen 10 und 35 % bzw. 3 und 35 %. Dièse Vegetation kontrastiert mit den Flechteneinheiten, die sich auf der Spitze der Hùgel befinden, wo man unter der Pflanzendecke Kohle von Picea mariana findet, Ùberreste von frûher ausgedehnteren Nadelbaumvegetationen. Eine Analyse der Radiokarbondatierungen der Baumkohle zeigt, dap die zentralen Insein des lac à l'Eau Claire seit mindestens 2350 Jahren BP eine Entwaldung durchmachen. In enger Verbindung mit dem Klima haben die Feuer die raumzeitliche Dynamik der Nadelwàlder tief beeinflupt. Die zentralen Insein des Lac à l'Eau Claire haben jede ihre eigene Feuer-Geschichte und folglich eine unterschiedliche Entwaldung. Fùnf Zeitabschnitte der Landschaftsôffnung wurden identifiziert und zwar 2350-2100, 1650-1450, 1350-1050, 850-650 und 400-200 BP. Ùbrigens schâtzt man auf ungefâhr 5 % die durch die Feuer von 400 BP entwaldete Flàche der zwei grôBten lnseln (Atkinson und Lepage); au(ierdem hat ein 200 Jahre altes Feuer ungefâhr 4 % der Insel Atkinson entwaldet. Man schlieBt daraus, dap die schwache Picea Bewaldung auf einigen Insein des Lac à l'Eau Claire die Schwierigkeiten der Picea Bewaldung nach einem Feuer illustrieren. Umgekehrt unterstreicht ihr Vorkommen an ungeschùtzten Plàtzen ihre Ùberlebensfâhigkeit, wenn keine grôBere Stôrung eintritt.
