Le choix des prénoms à Sudbury au tournant du XXe siècle

RÉSUMÉ

Le choix des prénoms, aspect encore peu exploré des données démographiques, offre des possibilités intéressantes de recherche. C’est à partir de ce postulat qu’a été réalisée la présente étude, tirée des registres de baptêmes de la paroisse Sainte-Anne-des-Pins de Sudbury au tournant du XX^e siècle, soit de 1884 à 1913. Ces registres permettent de comparer l’évolution de l’attribution des prénoms dans deux cultures voisines, l’anglophone et la francophone. On constate, entre autres, une augmentation du nombre de prénoms attribués à chaque enfant, l’importance croissante des prénoms Marie et Joseph, et la transmission aux enfants des prénoms de leurs parents, parrains et marraines. Un sondage dans la période 1945-1950 permet de suggérer, chez les francophones, la stabilité des pratiques découvertes à la génération précédente.

ABSTRACT

The choosing of first names, a topic which has rarely been explored in the field of demographic studies, offers interesting research possibilities. With this in mind, a study was undertaken using the baptismal records of the Sainte-Anne-des-Pins parish in Sudbury at the turn of the 20^th century, specifically the period from 1884 to 1913. These records allow the comparison of the giving of first names in the two main cultural groups which comprise the parish, those being anglophone and francophone. These records also make possible a study of the evolution of the practice of name giving. Amongst other things, we note the increase in the number of given names, the increasing frequency of the names Marie and Joseph, and the frequency of selection of the names of the parents and godparents. A sampling of records taken from the 1945-1950 period indicates that most of the namegiving practices of the earlier generation had been maintained.
