This article examines the theatrical and matrimonial allusions in the tenthcentury hagiography of the Byzantine touch-relic of Christ: the Mandylion. The legend of the Mandylion was said to have been created when Christ washed his face and left a likeness of his face on the cloth with which he dried himself. It became immensely popular in the Byzantine and East Christian worlds, and it stood for God's protection of his new chosen people, for his imminence in the material world, and for a divine ratification of Christian figural art. This article argues that the Mandylion's arrival at Edessa and its reception in the king's chamber invests the face of Christ with powerful possibilities of real union with God. Those possibilities were expressed in terms educated Byzantines could have recognized, visceral inversions of the classical past and of the Christian present. Not only were the possibilities recognizable, but they also underscored the legitimacy of sole rule by Constantine VII through parallels to the first Christian king, Abgar of Edessa.

Cet article examine les allusions théâtrales et matrimoniales dans l’hagiographie de la « relique-tactile » du Christ au X^e siècle byzantin : le Mandylion. Selon la légende, le Mandylion aurait été créé au moment ou le Christ se serait lavé le visage et qu’une empreinte de son visage se serait ainsi déposée sur le tissu dont il s’était servi pour se sécher. Le Mandylion acquiert une grande popularité a Byzance et dans l’Orient chrétien. Il incarne la protection de Dieu envers son nouveau peuple élu, son immanence dans le monde matériel, et offre une ratification divine de l’art figuratif chrétien. Cet article avance l’hypothèse que l’arrivée du Mandylion a Edesse et son accueil dans la chambre du roi investissent le visage du Christ d’un potentiel puissant d’union avec Dieu. Cette potentialité se trouvait exprimée dans des termes que des Byzantins instruits auraient pu reconnaitre, avec des inversions viscérales du passe classique et du présent chrétien. Elle venait souligner également la légitimité du règne absolu de Constantin VII, par analogie avec le premier roi chrétien, Abgar d’Edesse.

Cette étude consacrée à l’interprétation du portrait en malade tente de démontrer comment, à travers la littérature artistique de la Renaissance et dans le discours des historiens de l’art contemporains, le portrait représentant un personnage malade a fait l’objet d’une euphémisation dans laquelle une bonne santé de la peinture était privilégiée au détriment d’une interprétation plus probante du portrait pathologique. Par l’analyse de différents portraits de gens varioles, syphilitiques ou atteints d’autres pathologies à la Renaissance, il s’agit d’observer que la représentation du visage pathologique met à mal le statut même du portrait.

This study is devoted to the interpretation of the portrait of sickness. It tries to show how, in the literature on art at the Renaissance and in the contemporary art historian's discourses, portraits representing various pathologies have been subjected to a “euphemisation,” in which the good health of painting has always been privileged, to the detriment of a more convincing interpretation of the pathological portrait. Through the analysis of various portraits of individuals suffering from smallpox, syphilis and other pathologies common during the Renaissance, this article shows how the representation of the pathological face questions the very status of the portrait.

Longtemps considéré comme un genre inférieur, le portrait peint suscite, au XVII^e siècle, un engouement de plus en plus marqué chez un public de clients et d’amateurs. Or la théorie du portrait ne cesse d’entrer en dialogue avec les textes scientifiques ou religieux, philosophiques ou littéraires. Cet article met en évidence les enjeux théoriques reliés à la représentation du visage pour ensuite examiner de quelle façon les romans, récits et pièces du XVII^e siècle reprennent les principaux lieux communs du portrait peint, qu’il s’agisse du portrait comme substitut de la présence de l’autre, du problème de la comparaison entre le modèle et l’image peinte, l’original et la copie, l’être et le paraitre, ou de celui de la mise en scène de soi et de la vanité. Pareil tableau permet de montrer en quoi le portrait est un lieu ou s’incarnent à la fois les plus vives espérances sur les possibilités d’une représentation du visage susceptible de livrer l’intimité dans la plus parfaite transparence et les plus grandes inquiétudes théoriques au sujet d’un monde dominé par les apparences. Ce sont ces différentes tensions qui sont ensuite étudiées à partir de deux textes de Charles Sorel : Le berger extravagant (1627) et La description de l’isle de portraiture et de la ville des portraits (1659).

Long considered an inferior genre, the painted portrait in the 17th century sparked increasing enthusiasm among a public of both clients and amateurs. The theory of the portrait, at the time, constantly intersected with scientific, religious, philosophical or literary texts. This article highlights the theoretical issues regarding the representation of the face, then examines the manner in which 17th century novels, stories and plays reinvest the major themes of the painted portrait, whether it be the portrait as a substitute for the presence of the other, the comparison between the model and the painted image, original and copy, being and appearance, or the issue of self-exhibition and vanity. This tableau allows to show how the portrait embodies the most powerful hopes concerning the possibilities of representing a face capable of delivering intimacy with the highest degree of transparency and the profoundest theoretical anxieties about a world dominated by appearances. These different tensions are then examined in two texts by Charles Sorel: Le berger extravagant (1627) and La description de l'isle de portraiture et de la ville des portraits (1659).

La photographie du visage, l’empreinte digitale et l’autoradiogramme de l’ADN sont considérés comme différentes modalités d’un même paradigme d’identification des individus fonde sur l’inscription corporelle de l’identité et sur l’objectivité de l’enregistrement. L’auteur analyse ces présupposés et illustre leur application avec la mise au point du portrait d’identité par Alphonse Bertillon à la fin du XIXe siècle. Malgré l’évolution des modalités d’identification — du visage à l’ADN — le principe de la physiognomonie demeure, c’est-à-dire que l’indice corporel servant à contrôler l’identité sert aussi à diagnostiquer une identité essentielle. L’auteur souligne que la chirurgie, la génétique et l’image numérique, qui participent à l’évolution des techniques d’identification, modifient la conception et la représentation contemporaines du visage.

Photography, digital printings and DNA profile are different modalities of the same identification paradigm, which is based on bodily inscription of identity and objective recording. This article analyses these presumptions and illustrates their application in the history of scientific photography, namely through the invention of the ID card by Alphonse Bertillon at the end of the 19th century. Albeit the evolution of individual markers — from face to DNA — the physiognomic principle is maintained, since the index that allows checking identity also serves to determine an “essential” identity. The author argues that surgery, genetics and digital imagery, relevant in the improvement of identification techniques, change our conception and representation of the face.

Around 1900, the face took on new forms, functions, and meanings. Modes of figuring identity and aesthetic value or registering individual and social experience through the face changed. Georg Simmel's studies of modernity and the privileged status of the face are tied to reconfigurations of the face in literature (Proust), art (Redon), and film (the close-up), highlighting the dislocation of oppositions between interiority/exteriority, proximity/distance and human/machine.

Au tournant du XX^e siècle, le visage adopte de nouvelles formes, des nouvelles fonctions et des nouvelles significations. Les représentations de l’identité, les valeurs esthétiques, tout autant que l’expérience sociale et individuelle à travers le visage se trouvent modifiées. Les études que Georg Simmel consacre à la question de la modernité et au statut privilégié du visage sont liées de près a une reconfiguration du visage en littérature (Proust), en art (Redon) et au cinéma (le gros plan), révélant une dislocation des oppositions entre intériorité et extériorité, entre proximité et distance, entre l’humain et la machine.

Partant de l’importance que revêt la question du visage et du gros plan dans le medium cinématographique, et de sa théorisation dans la modernité allemande de la République de Weimar chez Walter Benjamin, Bela Balazs et Siegfried Kracauer, cet article jette un regard rétrospectif sur cette question en tentant de décrire l’enracinement de la nouvelle poétique de la surface photographique dans des questions herméneutiques abordées au tournant du siècle par Georg Simmel et Stefan George. Simmel a conceptualisé la signification esthétique du visage comme un agencement centralisateur, contre le dispositif de la photographie. Le poète George donne en revanche un premier exemple d’une pratique intermédiale réunissant écriture et photographie.

This article begins by stressing the importance of the face and the close up in the cinematographic medium, and briefly analyses its theorizations in German Modernity during the Weimar Republic (Walter Benjamin, Bela Balazs and Siegfried Kracauer). This article then takes a step back and tries to describe the roots of this new poetics of the photographic surface in hermeneutical debates which appear, at the turn of the century, in the writings of Georg Simmel and Stefan George. Simmel conceptualizes the aesthetic signification of the face as a centralized system, against the apparatus of photography. The poet George, on the other hand, offers one of the first examples of an intermedial practice, reuniting photography and written text.

In this article, the surface of the world is envisaged as a face. Cinema as a record of this surface, and as a medium which “re-invented” the face in the close-up shot, makes it possible to reflect on the status of the human subject in the universe, thanks to the concept of cinematic pantheism. Following Elie Faure, the author underscores the pantheistic nature of cinema and claims that cinematic pantheism is the way by which film produces simultaneously transcendence and immanence, and materializes the unity of both, thus confirming Siegfried Kracauer's theory according to which man, nature and culture are part of the same “visible phenomena” in cinema. Cinema transforms all beings into surfaces: it operates by facialization and surfacialization. On the other hand, the article revisits Deleuze and Guattari's concept of faciality and argues that it describes a surface operating as the interface of the body in its interaction with other bodies in the media, the realm of the divine, or the universe. Thus faciality is also landscapity, and activating the camera means “transfiguring” the human (or the landscape) into face and introducing a vis-a-vis: the face of God, as immanent transcendence. In that sense, cinematic mysticism, as in Paradjanov's, Makhmalbaf's and Mikhalkov's films, is pantheistic.

Dans cet article, la surface du monde est envisagée comme une face, un visage. En tant que registre de cette surface et que medium ayant « réinventé » le visage dans le gros plan, le cinéma permet une réflexion sur le statut du Sujet humain dans l’univers, grâce au concept du panthéisme cinématographique. Suivant Elie Faure, l’auteur souligne la nature panthéiste du cinéma et avance que le panthéisme cinématographique est le moyen par lequel le film produit la transcendance et l’immanence simultanément, et matérialise ainsi leur unité, confirmant la théorie de Siegfried Kracauer selon lequel l’humain, la nature et la culture ont partie intégrante des mêmes « phénomènes visibles » au cinéma. Le cinéma transforme tous les êtres en surfaces : il procède par « visageification » et par « surfacialisation ». D’autre part, l’article revisite le concept de visagéité chez Deleuze et Guattari et soutient que ce concept décrit une surface fonctionnant comme interface du corps dans son interaction avec d’autres corps dans les medias, dans la sphère du divin, ou dans l’univers. Ainsi, la visagéité est également paysagéité et l’action de la caméra signifie la « transfiguration » de l’humain (ou du paysage) en visage, en introduisant son vis-à-vis : le visage de Dieu, en tant que transcendance immanente. Dans ce sens, le mysticisme cinématographique, tel qu’il apparait dans les films de Paradjanov, Makhmalbaf et Mikhalkov, est panthéiste.

Il s’agit en quelque sorte d’une promenade qui part du poème de Gaston Miron dont cet article emprunte le titre; qui bute sur l’impraticable éthique de Levinas; qui s’avance à la rencontre de Freud sur la scène de la séance analytique ou le visage se fait miroir; qui croise Proust au Bal des têtes; convoque Moise et le voilement de la Face divine; et qui rejoint finalement Artaud devant ce toujours déjà à venir du visage. Variations on the face as metaphor, i.e. as a condensation of the visible and the invisible. This article proceeds as a stroll, a “promenade” beginning with a poem by Gaston Miron which provides the title for this text; stumping onto LÉvinas' impracticable ethic; moving towards Freud's scene and the analytical seance, where the face becomes mirror; crossing Proust's way, at the Bal of heads; convoking Moses and the veiling of the divine Face; reaching finally Artaud in front of the always already “to come” of the face. This article presents the face as time matter and origin of speech.

Le visage dans les œuvres de Chris Marker se présente comme l’objet d’une recherche sur l’image et sur la prégnance de la mémoire. Il est également le lieu d’un déchiffrement, s’offrant au regard tout en se dérobant sous des masques, entre les rets du temps. L’hypothèse de cet article est que le visage nous offre un fil de lecture pour aborder l’oeuvre de Marker : il y apparait comme une figure de médiation à part entière, qui en livre les promesses et les apories, les dissimulations et les instants de vérité.

The face in the works of Chris Marker appears as a central aspect of his reflection on the image and memory; it offers itself as something to be read and decrypted, while always slipping away beneath masks, between the shards of time. The hypothesis of this article is that the face provides us a reading key to traverse his complex body of works: it appears as a privileged figure of mediation, revealing its promises and its aporias, its dissimulations as well as its moments of truth.

Cet article a comme point de départ le passage du visage « littéraire » du monstre dans Frankenstein de Mary Shelley (1818) au célèbre visage cinématographique qu’a légué à la postérité le film de James Whale sous les traits de Boris Karloff. Le principe de l’inadéquation qui fonde le premier visage est maintenu dans le second, bien que considérablement transforme en fonction des possibilités qu’offre le medium cinématographique et du contexte socioculturel dans lequel celui-ci produit ses effets. Il s’agit de voir comment le Hollywood des années 1930 reprend le vieux filon de la fantasmagorie robertsonienne afin de produire un « flot » particulier de visages monadiques. Sur le mythe de Frankenstein se greffe la légende de Boris Karloff  : trajectoire démultipliée d’un visage « sans essence » et vide de son expérience, un visage-cadre légende, portant les marques d’une survivance et d’une errance en partage au détour de la « grande crise ».

The starting point of this article is the transition from the “literary” face of the monster in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818), to the famous cinematographic face that James Whale's film has left for posterity, under the traits of Boris Karloff. The idea of inadequacy which founds the first, is maintained in the latter, while being considerably transformed by the possibilities of the cinematographic medium and the sociocultural context in which it revealed its efficiency. The article wishes to stress the way by which Hollywood in the 1930's picked up the old thread of Robertson's phantasmagoria in order to produce a specific “flow” of monadic faces. Frankenstein's myth becomes entangled with Boris Karloff's legend: multifaceted trajectory of a face deprived of essence and bereft of experience, a face framed by its legend, bearing the marks of survival and shared wanderings, at the turn of the “Great Crisis.”

In the face of the current wave of mass migration in Western Europe, we ignore one group of people affected by the departure of young people from their communities: their mothers. Not only had they seen their children leave, but they even had to support that decision — “it's for his good” — while it affected their lives with a deep loss. This prompted the author to develop a video pro ject in which the heretofore invisible mothers were given the opportunity to speak about their departed children. The installation is entirely devoted to the issue of facing: literally, indirectly, and figuratively. The aesthetic of close-up, of one- shot filming, no-editing and hence, of non-interventionism, and of intimacy in filming as well as projecting makes this politics of facing a viable alternative to what Luc Boltanski has termed “the politics of pity.” In this article the author develops the concept of this project, both philosophically and semiotically, with the help of Spinoza and Deleuze, in order to articulate in what way this is an instance of “migratory aesthetics” as political art.

Face au phénomène de migrations de masse vers l’Europe de l’Ouest, on a tendance à ignorer un groupe de personnes particulièrement affecte par le départ des jeunes : les mères de ceux qui quittent. Non seulement ont-elles vu leurs enfants quitter leur communauté, elles doivent également défendre leurs décisions — « c’est pour son bien » —, alors que leur vie a été marquées par une perte profonde. Ceci amena l’auteur de cet article à développer un projet vidéo dans lequel ces mères, jusqu’ici invisibles, ont l’occasion de parler de leurs enfants qui ont émigré. L’installation est tout entière portée par la question de « l’envisagement » (facing), tant à un niveau littéral, indirect, que figural. L’esthétique du gros plan, du cadrage unique, de l’absence de montage et, partant, du non-interventionnisme, ainsi que l’intimité du tournage et de la projection font de cette politique de « l’envisagement » une alternative viable à ce que Luc Boltanski appelle une « politique de la pitié ». Dans cet article, l’auteur développe le concept de ce projet, philosophiquement et sémiotiquement, à partir de Spinoza et de Deleuze, afin de montrer en quoi cette installation offre un exemple d’« esthétique migratoire » en tant qu’art politique.
