Résumé

L’intermédialité du travail de Sophie Calle transforme les rapports entre texte et photographie en les déplaçant du statut de catégories matérielles étanches au rang, respectivement, de récit et d’image, par le biais d’une mise en fiction qui les fait accéder à la signification. Par ce glissement de valeur, ils ne se définissent plus séparément, mais participent également et conjointement d’un régime à la fois poétique et plastique qui les rend indivisibles. Ce sont alors des livres d’images à lire que produit l’artiste, dont les photographies ne sont pas tout à fait les illustrations, ni les textes à proprement parler les légendes.

Abstract

The intermediality displayed in Sophie Calle's work transforms the usual relations between text and photography by displacing their status as distinct material categories towards a new field of discourse where they become considered respectively as narration and image and thus, part of a fiction process in which they gain meaning. Through this transformation of values, both text and photography lose their specific definitions to become part of a poetic and plastic regime which renders them indivisible. The artist produces original books of images to read, whose photographs are not exactly illustrations, and whose texts are not captions per se.
