Un mage fait disparaître la tour Eiffel devant une foule étonnée, mais son amante résiste à son charme, et s’inquiète de l’usage que l’on pourrait faire de ce pouvoir singulier. Comment, et pourquoi, l’amante voit-elle, alors que les autres ne voient pas? Comment, en définitive, résister comme elle au pouvoir trompe-l’oeil, délocalisé et trans-personnel, qui agit par la perception plutôt que par la force, en changeant les contours du paraître? Ces questions sont poursuivies d’après certaines lignes de réflexion parallèles de Marx et de Wittgenstein, qui s’étendent sur les dangers que l’amante du mage pressent dans cet art de la disparition. Les deux philosophes se posent comme les témoins qui « voient » à travers les actes d’illusionnisme qui déforment, pour l’un, notre perception des relations sociales et de leur lien aux rapports de production, et pour l’autre, notre compréhension des formes d’expression et de leur imbrication dans les formes de vie qui leur donnent sens. Et, comme l’amante du mage, ils « voient » dans ces disparitions et apparitions des enjeux considérables, autant pour le « public » que pour les acteurs de ces spectacles quotidiens, puisqu’ils impliquent le transfert du pouvoir des agents à des instances désincarnées ou mystérieusement animées.

A magician makes the Eiffel Tower “disappear” under the eyes of a mystified crowd, but his lover resists the charm of his act, worrying about the use to which this singular display of power could be put. How, and why, does the lover see the Tower, while the others don't? How to resist the power of trompe-l'oeil, delocalized and transpersonal as it is, and acting on our perception rather than by force? This paper pursues these questions through a reading of aspects of Marx's Capital and Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations, both of which expand the dangers the magician's lover guesses in his art of disappearance. Both philosophers position themselves as witnesses who “see” through the distorting illusions: for Marx, our perception of social relations and their connection to relations of production; for Wittgenstein, our understanding of forms of expressions and of their inscription in the forms of life that confer meaning on them. Just like the magician's lover, they think that the stakes of these disappearances and appearances are considerable for the “public” as much as for the actors of such daily shows, as they imply a transfer of power, from real agents to mysteriously animated and disembodied entities.

Cet article propose de déplacer le point d’équilibre de la réflexion sur la disparition en n’en faisant plus l’objet du corps mais de l’esprit. Il prend la forme d’une brève, d’une très brève histoire des idées au XX^e siècle qui retrace, de la disparition élocutoire du poète chez Mallarmé à celle de l’écart entre les mots et les choses chez Virilio et Baudrillard, deux figures du mouvement qui, dans leur opposition, déterminent actuellement les pôles philosophique et technologique de la construction dynamique du sens. Qu’est-ce qui provoque le charme de la chorégraphie des signes? Qu’est-ce qui ravit l’écart entre deux termes? La synthèse ou le « suspens »? Cette brève histoire qui noue la question de la disparition à celle du mouvement tâchera dès lors de révéler la naissance de cette alternative et de l’emmener jusqu’à son expression contemporaine, au coeur de ce que l’on appelle l’intermédialité.

This paper proposes to shift the usual reflexion about disappearance, in focusing on the spirit rather than on the body. It takes the form of a short, very short story of 20th century's ideas which retraces—from the mallarmean “disparition élocutoire” to the gap between words and things according to Virilio and Baudrillard — two figures of movement that nowadays set, in their very opposition, the philosophical and the technological views on the dynamic construction of meaning. What causes the charm of signs' choreography? What closes the gap between two terms? Synthesis or suspens? In connecting two issues, disappearance and movement, the short story here proposed will try to bring to light the birth of an alternative, then to bring it to its contemporary expression, in the heart of what we call intermediality.

En Chine ancienne, le vocabulaire pour dire la disparition n’est pas celui de l’annihilation, c’est celui de l’éclipse, de l’oubli, du déplacement, éventuellement de la réduction ou de la transformation. La disparition est avant tout affaire de mouvement ou de déplacement : les choses disparaissent parce qu’elles sont passées dans une autre dimension, parce qu’elles ne coïncident plus dans l’espace, ou parce qu’elles sont cachées; elles n’en continuent pas moins d’exister. La mort elle-même s’explique par le mouvement, plus précisément par un réagencement de matière; le mort se transforme en autre chose, redevient matière brute — à proprement parler, il n’est pas anéanti. En Chine ancienne, la disparition n’est donc qu’un aspect de l’infinie variation des choses et du monde.

In ancient China, the vocabulary for disappearance is not one of annihilation. Rather, it is one of the eclipse, of the oblivion, of the displacement, and possibly of reduction or transformation. Disappearance is above all a question of movement or displacement: things disappear because they move to another dimension, because they do not coincide anymore in space, or because they are hidden; however, they continue to exist. Death itself is explained by movement, and more precisely, by a recombination of matter: the dead are transformed into something else, become sheer matter again — they are not, properly speaking, wiped out. In ancient China, disappearance is therefore only one aspect of the infinite variation of things and the world.

En 1832, Balzac compose une longue nouvelle, Le Colonel Chabert. Il y imagine le destin peu commun de cet officier de l’armée impériale qui, enseveli sous un tas de cadavres à la bataille d’Eylau, passe pour mort auprès de ses compagnons et de ses proches. Il échoue ensuite sans fin à faire reconnaître ses titres, comme être vivant parmi les vivants, tout simplement — une personne humaine. Et si, donc, Le Colonel Chabert était le premier grand texte littéraire moderne consacré à la question de la disparition?

In 1832, Balzac wrote a short story entitled Le Colonel Chabert in which he pictured the extraordinary destiny of an officer of the Imperial Army, Chabert. Having been buried under a heap of dead bodies at the Battle in Eylau, Chabert is considered dead by his companions and relatives, and fails from this day on to be acknowledged as a living person. Could Le Colonel Chabert be considered the first modern literary work devoted to the issue of disappearance?

This essay takes for its subject the disappearances of characters from two different texts: Ruth and Sarah, the Jewish servant girls expelled from Darlington Hall in Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day, and Mamillius, the heir to Leontes, King of Sicilia, who dies in Act 2 of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale. These characters are so absolutely erased from the texts in which they so briefly appear that it is as if they have been “disappeared” by them: they become, I argue, quite literally notable by their absence. Denied a presence in the texts, however, such personages do not, as might be expected, simply disappear. They won't quite go away; rather, they lodge instead in the mind of the reader, the pretence of their absence troubling the illusions of closure with which the texts both end. This displacement from textual to mental medium, I maintain, entails ethical consequences for the reader or audience. Unable to lay these ghosts to rest in the way in which the texts' protagonists appear to be able to do, the reader is forced to confront issues of responsibility not by what is present in the text, but by what is not there, or not there any longer.

Cet essai a pour sujet la disparition de personnages dans deux textes différents : Ruth et Sarah, les deux domestiques juives expulsés de Darlington Hall, dans The Remains of the Day de Kazuo Ishiguro ainsi que Mamillius, héritier de Léonte, roi de Sicile, qui meurt dans l’acte deux de Winter’s Tale de Shakespeare. Ces personnages sont si définitivement effacés du texte (où ils n’apparaissent que brièvement), que c’est comme si celui-ci les faisait « disparaître ». Selon nous, par leur absence, ces personnages sont d’autant plus remarquables. Bien qu’on leur refuse la présence, ces personnages ne disparaissent pas simplement. Ils ne partent pas tout à fait : ils résident plutôt dans le regard du lecteur, et leur apparente absence perturbe l’illusoire complétude dans laquelle se terminent les deux textes. Ce déplacement, du texte au regard, entraîne selon nous des conséquences d’ordre éthique pour le lecteur ou le spectateur. Incapable de laisser reposer ces fantômes comme les protagonistes du texte semblent, eux, capable de le faire, le lecteur est forcé de penser au problème de la responsabilité, non par ce qui est présent dans le texte, mais plutôt par ce qui n’y est plus.

La disparition politique — qui n’est pas encore un concept pour les sciences dites politiques — est un événement paradoxal : par définition, il n’y aura pas de témoins et les perpétrateurs ne parleront pas. C’est un engloutissement sans traces. Les deux vidéos étudiées de J. Hanono et de F. Menini redoublent le paradoxe parce que l’appareil vidéo, à la différence du cinéma, permet difficilement que le spectateur enchaîne sur l’oeuvre qui enkyste le maintenant d’une phrase-affect (Lyotard). Cette phrase-affect est ce qui subsiste d’un tel vécu traumatique, soit que la vidéaste ait vécu de l’intérieur sa propre disparition, soit qu’elle ait été témoin d’une destruction de masse. L’enjeu de ces vidéos est alors de rejoindre le maintenant passé du trauma, en luttant contre la répétition de la pulsion de mort (Freud) par la mise en place d’une représentation vidéographique.

Political disappearance — which is not yet a concept for the so-called political sciences — is a paradoxical event: by definition, there will be no witnesses and the perpetrators will not speak up. It is an engulfment that leaves no traces. The two videos studied here, J. Hanono and F. Menini's, reinforce this paradox because the video device, in contrast to that of cinema, makes it difficult for the spectator to connect with a work that encysts the here and now of a phrase-affect (Lyotard). This phrase-affect is what subsists from a certain traumatic experience, whether the video artist has experienced his/her own disappearance from the inside, or (s)he has witnessed mass destruction. What is at stake in these videos is the attempt to reunite the past here and now of the trauma, while fighting against the repetition of the death drive (Freud) by means of the set-up of a videographic representation.

Examining the microoperations of sound's physical properties moves us beyond the temporality that has functioned to dichotomize its appearances and disappearances as solely an experience of a “coming to” and a “fading away.” Characterized by a frenzy of heterogeneous activity at the physical level, sound has the ability to engender simultaneous registers of appearance and disappearance in which they are neither mutually exclusive nor can be clearly separated, inviting us to eschew the simplicity of their temporal dichotomization. Rather, the power of sound functions specifically because it forever intertwines its appearances and disappearances, simultaneously, in the creation of the sonic event with the listening subject.

L’observation des micro-opérations des propriétés physiques du son permet de dépasser la temporalité qui a jusqu’ici servi à en distinguer l’apparition et la disparition en ce qui touche la « venue » et l’« estompement ». Caractérisé par une vive activité hétérogène au plan physique, le son est capable d’engendrer des registres simultanés d’apparition et de disparition dans lesquels ceux-ci ne peuvent ni s’exclure mutuellement ni se distinguer clairement, ce qui devrait nous inciter à éviter la simple dichotomie temporelle. Il semble plutôt que la puissance du son tienne dans l’entremêlement de l’apparition et de la disparition, simultanément, dans la création d’événements sonores selon un sujet à l’écoute.

This essay traces the disappearance of the Soviet Union through aesthetical and everyday objects, and through an organization of the ethical and economic values that mark the so-called post-Soviet world. Looking through the different ways historical changes are mediated and made apprehensible, I propose to read Ryszard Kapuscinski's non-fictional account Imperium, Zbigniew Herbert's poems “Elegy for the Departure of Pen, Ink and Lamp” and “The Envoy of Mr. Cogito,” and Krzysztof Kieslowski's film No End (1984). I argue that the vicissitudes of disappearance question notions of historical rupture, making visible the processes of cultural renegotiation and reconstitution.

Cet article retrace la disparition de l’Union soviétique à partir d’objets esthétiques et quotidiens, en analysant l’organisation de valeurs éthiques et économiques qui marquent le prétendu monde post-soviétique. L’auteur propose une lecture du récit semi-biographique de Ryszard Kapuscinski, Imperium, des poèmes de Zbigniew Herbert, « Élégie pour le départ de la plume, de l’encre, de la lampe » et « Message de Monsieur Cogito », ainsi que du film de Krzysztof Kieslowski, Sans fin (1984), en cherchant à interroger les médiations du changement historique et ses divers modes d’appréhension. L’auteure tente de montrer que les vicissitudes de la disparition remettent en question la notion de rupture historique, en rendant visibles les processus de renégociation et de reconstitution culturels.

This essay discusses problems pertaining to the disappearance of the language of the original text in the case of literary translation. After a reminder of recent criticism directed against ethnocentric translation strategies, the question is raised of the theoretical promises of alternative strategies. The text examines the different ways in which the relations between language and culture are theorized, taking two lines of inquiry that have strongly infl uenced contemporary translation theory: that of German Romanticism and that of Walter Benjamin.

Le texte concerne les incidences de la disparition de la langue d’un texte original, dans le cas de la traduction littéraire. Il commence par un rappel de la problématique élaborée, à cet égard, par la critique actuelle de l’appropriation ethnocentrique de l’original par la langue d’arrivée. Il examine, par la suite, les présupposés théoriques de cette critique, en insistant sur les différentes manières dont les rapports entre langue et culture sont traités par la théorie de la traduction du romantisme allemand et par celle de Walter Benjamin.
