Abstract
During the past thirty years, researchers have reconceptualized historical change within and across societies. At the time of the “new social history” in the 1960s and 1970s, scholars may have argued about method and the relative importance of “top-down” and “bottom-up” forces but they generally shared key assumptions about historical change including linearity, singularity, and simplicity. By the 1980s, however, historical thinking was becoming part of a campus-wide reconceptualization of change that emphasizes non-linearity, multiplicity, and complexity. An analysis of the discipline of History illustrates how this reconceptualization is laying the foundation for unprecedented horizontal connections of the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, and biomédical fields. C.P. Snow's description of Two Cultures may still apply to many aspects of university life but the profound rethinking now underway in History and other disciplines points to the possibility of interconnected scholarly cultures.
Résumé
Durant les trente dernières années, les historiens ont repensé la manière dont le changement se produit au sein et à travers les sociétés. A l'époque de la « nouvelle histoire sociale » des années I960 et 1970, les universitaires ont pu soutenir l’importance relative des forces « descendantes » et « ascendantes », mais ils partageaient généralement les mêmes hypothèses clés sur le changement historique, notamment la linéarité, la singularité et la simplicité. Toutefois, dans les années 1980, la pensée historique sur le changement a peu à peu adhéré à une pensée nouvelle qui mettait l’accent sur la non-linéarité, la multiplicité et la complexité. Une analyse de la discipline de I’histoire illustre comment cette conceptualisation nouvelle fonde un rapport horizontal sans précédent entre les sciences humaines, les sciences sociales, les sciences naturelles, l'ingénierie et les domaines biomédicaux. On peut toujours appliquer la description des deux cultures de CP. Snow à plusieurs aspects de la vie universitaire, mais la profondeur de la nouvelle pensée qui a cours en histoire et dans d'autres disciplines soulève la possibilité d'une interconnexion de la culture universitaire.
