AB - This paper examines the legacy of Robert Owen (1771–1858) in the British left, between mythicization and unresolved conflicting interpretations. The chief stumbling block was the Marxist critique of Owenism, which, as a matter of canon, classified Owen’s thought as “utopian socialism.” We posit that since the late 19th century, moderate socialists have used Owen against Marx in order to found a national political tradition, but have not managed to get beyond an always underlying utopian horizon.
