AB - The figure of Jean-Jules Jusserand, diplomat of the Third Republic and editor of the series “Les Grands Écrivains Français” (Hachette, 1887-1913) highlights the collective dimension of the production of national literary heritages at the end of the nineteenth century. His activity as a series editor consisted of multiple negotiations with the editor and with the authors that he had managed to assemble (among them, Ferdinand Brunetière, Anatole France, Gaston Paris, and Gustave Lanson) for the success of his project: namely, to bring great men of the past closer to contemporary readers. Seeing him as an author of the series allows the investigation of a different authorship regime, non-literary, characterized by the production of knowledge and by its fragmentation among several participants.
