Résumé
Le « Bas de la Pyramide » (BdP), est-il le nouvel Eldorado pour les entreprises, ou seulement un miroir aux alouettes ? L’examen des activités « BdP » existantes montre que les entreprises ont beaucoup de mal à gagner de l’argent en offrant aux populations les plus pauvres de la planète des produits et des services qui sont censés contribuer à la résolution de problèmes sociaux ou environnementaux. Cet article suggère cependant que les entreprises doivent persévérer dans leurs efforts. Nous proposons des solutions pour surmonter les obstacles économiques, sociaux et politiques des projets « BdP » et discutons le rôle de ces initiatives en matière d’innovation et de croissance.

Abstract
Is « Base of the Pyramid » (BoP) the new Eldorado for companies or only « smoke and mirrors »? It is extremely challenging for companies to make profits through offering products and services to the world’s poorest populations, while supposedly tackling social or environmental issues. This article nevertheless aims to show that companies need to push on their initiatives at the BoP. We propose solutions to get over economic, social and political obstacles facing companies’ BoP initiatives and discuss the crucial role of these initiatives in terms of innovation and growth.

Resumen
¿La « Base de la Pirámide” (BoP), es el nuevo El Dorado para las negocios o simplemente un espejismo? El análisis de las empresas que ofrecen productos y servicios a las poblaciones más pobres del planeta muestra que les resulta extremadamente difícil obtener beneficios manteniendo la meta de atenuar problemas sociales o medioambientales. Sin embargo, el objetivo de este artículo es demostrar que las empresas deben perseverar en sus esfuerzos “BoP”. En él proponemos soluciones para superar los obstáculos económicos, sociales y/o políticos que enfrentan los proyectos “Base de la Pirámide” y presentamos el papel fundamental de estas iniciativas en términos de innovación y de crecimiento.
