Abstract

In this essay, we review empirical, theoretical, and substantial grey literature in relation to immigrant youth and health promoting schools (HPS). We examine the health promotion concept to consider how it may inform the HPS model. Using Canada as an example, we examine current immigrant youth demographics and define several key terms including immigrant, youth, and health. Our review highlights important knowledge gaps related to the role of education and migration as antecedents to immigrant youth health and wellbeing as well as qualitative and educational research approaches. We conclude by providing recommendations for future immigrant youth research in the context of HPS.

Résumé

Cet article explore la documentation empirique, théorique ainsi que la littérature grise traitant des jeunes immigrants et des écoles axées sur la promotion de la santé. Nous y faisons l’examen du concept de promotion de la santé et la manière dont celui-ci peut façonner le contexte de ces écoles. En utilisant le Canada comme exemple, nous examinons les tendances démographiques actuelles chez la jeunesse immigrante. Nous définissons également plusieurs termes-clés tels qu’immigrant, jeunesse et santé. Notre étude met en lumière d’importants fossés cognitifs en lien avec le rôle de l’éducation et la migration comme préalables à la santé et au bien-être des jeunes immigrants. Celle-ci aborde aussi des approches qualitatives et éducationnelles. Nous terminons en formulant des suggestions de pistes de recherches concernant la recherche sur les jeunes immigrants dans le contexte des écoles axées sur la promotion de la santé.

Biographical notes

Lawrence Nyika recently completed a PhD in Educational Studies at St. Francis Xavier University, Nova Scotia. He is passionate about youth health research, health promoting schools, social determinants of heath, and Black education studies.

Charmaine McPherson is an Associate Professor (on Leave) in the School of Nursing at St. Francis Xavier University. She is currently Executive Director for the Risk Mitigation – Primary and Acute Care Branch of the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness. Her research focuses on public policy and system strengthening framed by health equity and critical social science.

Anne Murray-Orr is an Associate Professor of literacy and early elementary pedagogy in the Faculty of Education at St. Francis Xavier University. Literacies across disciplines, the experiences of Mi’kmaq pre-service teachers, and the impact of graduate programs for early elementary teachers are three of her current research areas.

Lawrence Nyika a récemment complété son doctorat en sciences de l’éducation à la St. Francis Xavier University, située en Nouvelle-Écosse. Il se passionne pour la recherche portant sur la santé des jeunes, les écoles axées sur la promotion de la santé, les éléments déterminants en santé, ainsi qu’en sciences de l’éducation des populations noires.

Charmaine McPherson est professeure agrégée (en congé) à l’École des sciences infirmières de la St. Francis Xavier University. Elle est actuellement directrice générale de la Direction de l’atténuation des risques – Soins primaires et aigus du ministère de la Santé et du Mieux-être de la Nouvelle-Écosse. Ses recherches portent sur les politiques publiques et le renforcement des systèmes encadrés par l’équité en santé et les sciences sociales critiques.

Anne Murray-Orr est professeur agrégé à la faculté des sciences de l’éducation de la St. Francis Xavier University. Elle enseigne la littératie et la pédagogie du début de l’élémentaire. L’alphabétisation au sein des diverses disciplines académiques, les expériences vécues par de futurs enseignants d’origine micmaque et l’impact des programmes de maîtrise sur ceux enseignant aux clientèles du début de l’élémentaire constituent trois de ses domaines de recherche actuels.
