À la suite du don d’un fonds d’archives sur le surtitrage du français vers l’anglais à Toronto, l’équipe du projet de recherche Le surtitrage : génétique, conservation et utilisation a été appelée à interroger sa responsabilité quant au devoir de mémoire qui concerne les pratiques culturelles donnant un résultat performatif dans les communautés de langue officielle en situation minoritaire au Canada. Composée d’une chercheuse en traduction théâtrale, d’une archiviste et d’une étudiante en intégration des connaissances, l’équipe en question examine la distinction importante entre l’archivage et l’archivistique, distinction qui traverse le geste d’archiver qu’elle est appelée à pratiquer. Elle s’attarde sur les aspects techniques, managériaux et sociaux de sa démarche d’archivage, ainsi que sur les limites de l’application des principes de gestion des données. Elle décrit ainsi une expérience concentrée et peut-être transférable de l’archivage des arts de la scène issus des communautés minoritaires à l’ère numérique.

The research team for the project Le surtitrage : génétique, conservation et utilisation received a fonds of documents pertaining to theatrical surtitling from French to English in Toronto. Following this donation, the team composed of a scholar in theatre translation, an archivist and a student in knowledge integration asks who is responsible for the duty of memory pertaining to performing arts in Canada’s minority communities. They examine the important distinction between archiving and the discipline of archival studies that blurs the conception of the “archive(s)” they are called upon to create. In this article, they provide a detailed account of the technical, managerial and social aspects that characterize their archiving approach. In so doing, they describe a concentrated experience of archiving performing arts artefacts from minority communities in the digital age, highlighting its technical and social possibilities, as well as the limits of applying certain data management principles.

Cet article propose une étude du cas Somim, plateforme numérique consacrée au Festival Mimos (Périgueux, France). Ce point d’ancrage invite à une réflexion plus globale sur les enjeux de mémoire, de médiation et de légitimation culturelles inhérents à ces objets virtuels. Inscrites dans les politiques publiques françaises de numérisation depuis les années 1990, les plateformes numériques vouées aux arts vivants mettent en tension des questions de conservation, d’usage et de médiation des archives audiovisuelles. En observant le cas de Somim et en jetant un regard sur cinq plateformes similaires, l’article montre que ces dispositifs numériques participent à la construction d’une mémoire collective tout en révélant les fragilités économiques, techniques et symboliques des processus contemporains de patrimonialisation des arts du mime français en particulier, et du spectacle vivant en général.

This article presents a case study of Somim, a digital platform dedicated to the Mimos Festival (Périgueux, France). This point of entry opens onto a broader reflection on the issues of memory, mediation, and cultural legitimation inherent to such virtual objects. Situated within French public digitization policies since the 1990s, digital platforms devoted to the performing arts bring into tension questions of preservation, use, and the mediation of audiovisual archives. By examining the case of Somim and looking at five similar platforms, the article shows that these digital systems contribute to the construction of a collective memory while revealing the economic, technical, and symbolic fragilities of contemporary processes of patrimonialization of the French mime arts in particular, and of the performing arts more broadly.

Le projet Moé j’viens du nord, ‘stie – 50 ans a été élaboré avec un double objectif, soit la constitution du dossier de genèse (ou génétique) pour documenter et analyser le processus de création, puis la mise en valeur des archives pour en diffuser les résultats au plus large public possible. La rareté des archives institutionnelles a mené à la consultation d’archives privées, mais aussi au recours à des archives « fabriquées » (Denizot, 2014), sous forme de témoignages. Cette démarche a suscité une réflexion sur la notion d’archive et sur l’intégration de documents métagénétiques dans le dossier de genèse et les expositions.

The research Moé j’viens du nord, ‘stie – 50 ans was developed with two goals, namely the constitution of the genesis (or genetic) file to document and analyze the creation process, then the presentation of this research to disseminate the results to the widest possible audience. The scarcity of institutional archives has led to the consultation of private archives but also to the use of “fabricated” archives (Denizot, 2014), in the form of testimonies. This approach led to a reflection on the notion of archive and the integration of metagenetic documents into the genesis file and the exhibitions.

Le texte « documentaire » Les laboratoires Crête (2008) rassemble les traces d’une oeuvre qu’on peut considérer comme un théâtre de sciences, impliquant à la fois une expérimentation sur la forme théâtrale et une théâtralisation de la démarche expérimentale. Il s’agissait, pour le comédien Stéphane Crête, de s’approprier les sciences afin d’observer comment l’état de conscience des acteur·trices affectait leur jeu, et s’il était possible de l’améliorer en modifiant cet état. Cet article propose de réfléchir aux articulations sciences-théâtre dans l’ouvrage documentaire, lequel fait agir les traces en dehors d’une perspective exclusivement historique.

The “documentary” text Les laboratoires Crête (2008) presents traces of a show which could be described as a science play, since it both experiments on theatrical forms and performs the scientific method. Actor Stéphane Crête appropriated science to examine how the state of consciousness of actors affected their performance, and if altering it could enhance their work. This article analyses the relationship between science and theatre in the documentary text, which activates traces outside of a historical perspective.

Sylvie Perault (2007) décrit le cycle de vie du costume en trois phases : sa confection en tant qu’objet artisanal, sa représentation sur scène comme objet théâtral et sa préservation en tant qu’objet patrimonial. Après la représentation, le costume peut suivre trois voies : l’entreposage temporaire, où il est réutilisé pour le même spectacle; l’archivage et l’exposition, où il devient un objet de collection présenté au public; et la réutilisation, où il est modifié pour une nouvelle production, souvent avec une approche écoresponsable appelée « écoconception ». Roxanne Martin explore les différentes vies possibles de l’objet patrimonial ainsi que les défis rencontrés dans la reconstitution de sa mémoire.

Sylvie Perault (2007) describes the life cycle of a costume in three phases: its creation as a craft object, its use on stage as a theatrical object, and its preservation as a heritage object. After the performance, the costume can follow three paths: temporary storage, where it is reused for the same production; archiving and exhibition, where it becomes a collection item displayed publicly; and re-use, where it is modified for a new production, often with an eco-friendly approach known as eco-design. Roxanne Martin explores the various potential lives of the heritage object, and the challenges encountered in reconstructing its memory.

Cet article analyse la manière dont Emma Dante déconstruit les stéréotypes liés au féminin et au genre dans deux de ses adaptations théâtrales contemporaines de contes de fées. L’étude des pièces La bella Rosaspina addormentata (2013) et Anastasia, Genoveffa e Cenerentola (2010) met en lumière la manière dont Dante remplace les modèles patriarcaux par des personnages hybrides et subversifs. Le théâtre devient un espace de « quotidianisation » (« quotidianizzazione »; Barsotti, 2016) du merveilleux d’où émergent les archétypes jungiens de l’Amante et de la Femme sauvage. Le travestissement, la non-binarité et la critique sociale y occupent une place centrale, faisant du théâtre dantien un outil politique et inclusif qui interroge la binarité et valorise la liberté des corps et des identités.

This article examines how Emma Dante deconstructs stereotypes associated with femininity and gender in two of her contemporary theatrical adaptations of fairy tales. The analysis of La bella Rosaspina addormentata (2013) and Anastasia, Genoveffa e Cenerentola (2010) highlights the ways in which Dante replaces patriarchal models with hybrid and subversive characters. Theatre thus becomes a space of “everydayization” (“quotidianizzazione”; Barsotti, 2016) of the marvellous, from which the Jungian archetypes of the Lover and the Wild Woman emerge. Cross-dressing, non-binarity and social critique occupy a central place, making Dante’s theatre a political and inclusive tool that questions binarity and promotes the freedom of bodies and identities.

Cet article explore l’univers sonore du Dortoir (1988) de Carbone 14, un paysage acoustique où se mêlent murmures intimistes, chuchotements rythmiques et fracas soudains. À travers l’analyse des strates sonores – voix, bruits d’objets, percussions corporelles, musique enregistrée –, il montre comment le spectacle articule un continuum de tensions allant du souffle retenu à l’éruption sonore. L’étude met en lumière la manière dont ce travail sur le son structure l’espace, module le rythme scénique et participe à la création d’une poétique du souvenir, oscillant entre fragilité, violence et résonances affectives.

This article explores the sound world of Le dortoir (1988) by Carbone 14, an acoustic landscape in which intimate murmurs, rhythmic whispers, and sudden crashes intertwine. Through an analysis of sonic layers – voices, object sounds, bodily percussion, recorded music – it shows how the performance articulates a continuum of tensions, from held breath to sonic eruption. The study highlights how this work with sound structures space, shapes scenic rhythm, and contributes to the creation of a poetics of memory, oscillating between fragility, violence, and affective resonances.

Avant 2020 et la pandémie de coronavirus, les grands théâtres français possèdent déjà leur chaîne YouTube, mais ne mettent en ligne que de brefs extraits. YouTube diffuse surtout du théâtre de boulevard. À partir des premières restrictions liées à la crise sanitaire, cet usage boulevardier s’intensifie, mais on constate aussi quelques nouveaux usages de YouTube, devenu temporairement le refuge du spectacle vivant. Ces expérimentations invitent à se demander, d’une part, si YouTube n’est que conjoncturellement propice au théâtre et, d’autre part, si les quelques formes spectaculaires nouvelles qui s’y déploient peuvent encore être appelées « théâtre », dès lors que la coprésence acteur·trices / spectateur·trices n’a lieu à aucun moment.

Before 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic, major French theatres already had their own YouTube channels, but only posted short excerpts. YouTube mainly featured boulevard theatre. From the first restrictions linked to the public-health crisis onward, this boulevard-style use intensified, but the emergence of new uses of YouTube can also be observed, as the platform temporarily became a refuge for live performance. These experiments raise, on the one hand, the question of whether YouTube is only contingently conducive to theatre and, on the other hand, whether the few new performative forms that have developed there can still be called “theatre”, given that actor / spectator co-presence never takes place.
