Abstract
Politics is a challenging environment in which women must overcome obstacles on a daily basis. The general objective of this study was to compare the profile of women who are more politically involved with those who are less involved. In this context, a questionnaire was sent to women who participated in the École Femmes et Démocratie (School Women and Democracy, 2004-2009), which offers training to women who consider a political career. The questionnaire contained items identified by researchers as measuring women’s political commitment, but not necessarily empirically tested in relevant samples. Two groups were formed, women who are fully committed to politics and those who limit their participation. In view of the fact that the majority of participants were not yet active in politics, the variable “community involvement,” identified as a determinant of political commitment (Elder, 2004), was used to divide the two groups. Discriminant analysis allowed us to identify the factors distinguishing the two groups, such as resilience, personal, relational and political self-evaluations of competence. This study contributed to a more accurate understanding of the experiences of women who engage on the road of politics. As such, theoretical and practical implications were discussed.
