Effet ajouté de la participation des pères à une intervention familiale Added effect of the fathers’ participation in a family intervention

Résumé

Cette étude évalue l’effet ajouté de la participation des pères à l’intervention familiale du programme de prévention Fluppy sur la qualité des pratiques parentales (mesurées à partir de l’observation directe d’une interaction parent-enfant) et sur le degré des difficultés de comportement manifestées par les enfants (mesurées selon l’enseignante et selon la mère). Une évaluation prétest et une évaluation post-test ont été effectuées sur trois groupes équivalents. Dans un premier groupe, les deux parents ont participé à l’intervention (groupe PM, n = 37 enfants, 37 pères et 37 mères); dans un second groupe, seule la mère y a pris part (groupe MS, n = 13 enfants et 13 mères) et dans un groupe témoin, ni la mère ni le père n’ont participé à l’intervention (groupe T, n = 18 enfants, 18 pères et 18 mères). Les résultats indiquent un effet groupe x temps significatif qui se traduit par une amélioration des pratiques parentales des mères du groupe PM et par une détérioration des pratiques parentales des mères des groupes MS, ainsi que de celles des pères et des mères du groupe T. Les analyses ne démontrent pas d’effet à court terme de la participation du père sur la modification des difficultés de comportement des enfants. L’ensemble des résultats propose des pistes intéressantes pour l’intervention, notamment quant à l’importance de bien évaluer les pratiques parentales des pères autant que celles des mères, ainsi qu’en regard des avantages possibles à retirer des efforts mis en place pour rejoindre les deux parents des enfants qui présentent des difficultés précoces de comportement.

Abstract

This study evaluates the added effect of the father’s participation in the family intervention, as outlined in the Fluppy prevention program, on the quality of the parents’ practices (measured by direct observation of a parent-child interaction) and on the level of problem behaviour presented by the children (measured according to accounts obtained from teachers and mothers). Pretest and post-test evaluations were carried out among three equivalent groups. In a first group, both parents participated in the intervention (group PM, n = 37 children, 37 fathers and 37 mothers); in a second group, only the mother participated (group MS, n = 13 children and 13 mothers) and in a control group, neither the mother nor the father participated (group T, n = 18 children, 18 fathers and 18 mothers). Results show a significant time x group effect that translates into improved parental practices of mothers in group PM and a deterioration of parental practices in the MS group as well as a deterioration in fathers’ and mothers’ practices in group T. Further analyses did not demonstrate that the father’s involvement had any short term effect on problem behaviour modification in children. Overall, the results bring out interesting leads for intervention, in particular with regards to the importance of thoroughly evaluating the father’s practices as well as those of the mother, and the potential advantages of efforts made to reach both parents of children who present problem behaviour at an early age.
