Abstract
Article 12 of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child explicitly affirms children’s right to participation: they should be able to express themselves freely and their views should be taken into account. However, the preliminary report of the Special Commission on the Rights of the Child and the Protection of Youth (2020) highlights the lack of participation of children. Our question is: How can we promote children participation to the services they receive? We used participatory research approach to answer this question. Eleven children aged seven to 12 years old attending a Community Social Pediatrics Centeŕ were involved in two working groups in which different modalities to support their expression (discussion, drawings, role-playing, video and games) were proposed. Synopses of the meetings were produced and then analyzed using the analytical questioning method. The results first reflect the children’s ability to participate and their desire to speak up in order to have an impact on decisions that concern them. They highlight a global definition of participation that includes affective, relational and contextual elements. They also allow us to identify facilitators to their participation. In discussion, three lessons, drawn from the children’s words, are presented to inspire a transition towards the use of participatory practices with children.
