Le Canot à glace : un patrimoine immatériel unique et exceptionnel The ice canoe : a unique and exceptional form of intangible culture

La Société québécoise d’ethnologie (Sqe) a récemment réalisé, pour le compte de la Ville de Québec et du ministère de la Culture, des communications et de la condition féminine (Mcccf), une étude sur le phénomène de la traversée du fleuve Saint-Laurent en canot à glace. L’objectif de la recherche était de faire la démonstration de l’importance patrimoniale de cette pratique qui remonte aux origines de la colonie mais qui se renouvelle chaque année, principalement dans le cadre des festivités du Carnaval de Québec. Dans son article, Genest – chargé de projet et à ce titre responsable du dossier – expose la démarche suivie par le consultant, Richard Lavoie, un spécialiste de la question, depuis la recherche préliminaire jusqu’à la préparation d’un rapport synthèse, en passant par la consultation des sources archivistiques et historiques et les enquêtes de terrain. Il fait état des trois grandes parties du rapport et de l’analyse qui en découle sur la base d’une grille de critères établie par l’Unesco pour déterminer la valeur patrimoniale des candidatures présentées dans le cadre du programme de reconnaissance des « chefs-d’oeuvre du patrimoine oral et immatériel de l’humanité. »

Abstract

The Société québécoise d’ethnologie recently carried out a study of the phenomenon represented by the crossing of the Saint Lawrence River by canoe. The study was jointly sponsored by the Québec City administration and the Québec Department of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women. The objective was to demonstrate the importance of this heritage event that is repeated each year during Québec Winter Carnival festivities, although its origins go back to colonial times. Here Bernard Genest, who was the person in charge of the study, presents the approach used by Richard Lavoie, a specialist of the topic who acted as consultant. The article begins with preliminary research and ends with the preparation of the final report. It also deals with research into historical and archival sources, as well as field interviews. In all three sections of the report, data was analyzed using criteria established by Unesco in order to determine the relative merit of proposals submitted to the “Masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity” program.
