AB - This article discusses the potential roles played by Canadian voyageurs in the acceptance of Catholicism among Aboriginal Abitibi-Témiscamingue between 1836 and 1863. Those engaged in the fur trade, despite having been charged of exhibiting immoral behaviors, are presented here as auxiliary priests and who generally supported the implementation of Catholic missions in Aboriginal territory. The rapid conversion of Aboriginal people to the new faith could be related, in part, to the continued presence of Canadian voyageurs of Catholic heritage, which happened to be the foreigners with whom they shared most of their daily lives before the arrival of the first missionaries in 1836.
