Director Alberto Arvelo’s 2013 biopic of Simón Bolívar, Libertador, recasts the general as physically handsome in order to use the actor Édgar Ramírez’s body to enhance the audience’s affective response toward his person, and, by extension, the Venezuelan nation. Curiously, this contemporary film portrayal of Bolívar evokes the use of portraiture during the Virreinato and Independence eras, which stoked nationalistic attachment by synecdoche through using portraits as stand-ins for national heroes such as Bolívar. Libertador thus invokes the past even as it invites spectators of the present to feel something new for its protagonist.

Como todas las expresiones artísticas durante la dictadura militar de Augusto Pinochet, la antipoesía fue obligada a negociar lo que podía ser dicho con lo que el poeta quería decir. Esta negociación dio pie a una serie de experimentos con el lenguaje, incluyendo la ambigüedad sistemática y la puesta en cuestión de la autoridad del autor, el anacronismo, la parodia, la ironía, etc. Estas técnicas son leídas en este artículo como un mecanismo para evitar la censura y denunciar el dogmatismo, es decir, como una estrategia para defender la libertad de expresión. Like all artistic expressions during the Chilean military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, antipoetry was forced to negotiate what could be said with what the poet wanted to say. The necessary negotiation that Parra’s poetry needed to undergo gave rise to many experiments with language, including systematic ambiguity, and the contestation of the authority of the author, anachronism, parody, irony, etc. These experiments are read in this article as a mechanism to avoid censorship and denounce dogmatism, thus, as a strategy to avoid the suppression of poetry’s right to say everything. I also refer to the range of effects these poetic techniques enact, and the logic they subvert.

Cuando la historiografía se pone al servicio de una ideología, la historia se convierte en mito, en una identidad fija que representa los intereses de un grupo particular, centrándose en la esencia inmutable del grupo y construyendo narrativas heroicas fijas que posibilitan la creación de comunidades imaginadas. La novela Eva (2017) desvela las mitificaciones generadas por ambos bandos de la contienda, mostrando un mundo falto de valores en el que muy pocos viven realmente según sus ideales.

This article demonstrates that Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora’s Infortunios de Alonso Ramírez (1690) engages the discourse of pity to create an imperial community. While the article builds on recent scholarship that has emphasized the global context of Ramírez’s travels, it shows that geographical displacement is not the only type of movement in this text. Infortunios also demands that readers be moved on an affective level in order to prove their capacity to feel for an imperial peer. In this regard, it is not geopolitics alone, but also affective transits that determine the boundaries and binds of Spanish empire.

In early modern Spain, bees inspired admiration for their exemplary sexual life since their supposedly asexual spontaneous generation made them models of chastity within the hive, an idealized masculine commune led by a king bee. However, bee imagery frequently appears in erotic literature and an astonishing number of Spanish texts on prostitution, including two of the most iconic, La Celestina (1499) and La Lozana andaluza (1528), which apply apiary metaphors to a female procuress. This article examines this seeming contradiction to argue that apiary metaphors applied to prostitution dehumanize the prostitute as an exemplary beast in the bestiary tradition.

Benito Pérez Galdós’s Misericordia (1897) represents two opposing models of providing care for diseased, disabled, or degenerate subjects: custodial care aimed at controlling social deviance and caregiving that takes into account the needs of the care recipient. I propose that, through the caregiving model, the protagonist, Benina, establishes a powerful stance against medical and economic discourses that devalued the lives of marginal subjects. This analysis examines the relationship between the categories of disease, disability, and degeneration; the role of custodial care and caregiving in the nineteenth-century Spanish economy; and how both models respond to the possibility of contagion, as well as the political implications of these responses.

This essay studies Cartas de Amambay (1878) and other pieces by Lucio Mansilla on Paraguay, where he unsuccessfully conducted gold exploration after the War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870), in order to elucidate the encounter between literature and natural sciences. Although a follower of the Alliance’s ideology, Mansilla elaborates a defense of literary autonomy regarding its capacity for the representation of and knowledge about the territory where he traveled. This defense has a dark side: its constitution and legitimization were based on the suppression of local heterogeneity, a process that could be regarded as equivalent to the subduing effects of multiple late nineteenth-century natural sciences on local knowledge and its agents.

This article questions the paternal logic of José Martí’s nationalism, through the works Abdala (1869) and Ismaelillo (1882). Martí’s nineteenth-century writing announces the creation of a Cuban nation defined by many in terms of his literary production. However, there remains another Martí, a maternal Martí that escapes our intentions to define and concretize his Work. Beginning with Bracha Ettinger’s concept of the “matrixial,” I maintain that these texts disintegrate the borders between the national body, the individual, and the writer and that this paternal Martí gives way to a maternal relation.

In “Las mariposas”, considered by many María Luisa Puga’s best short story, we meet a rebel who is not satisfied with the turns his life story took. Jailed in a military hospital and believing he is about to be tortured to death to get information out of him, he feels pressed to resolve his questions and starts writing to make sense of his decisions, his nonconformity and to come up with something that would give his death some kind of meaning. In this essay, we ask, as Albert Camus did in The Rebel, if a just rebel can transform into a bloodthirsty assassin.
