Résumé
Après avoir étudié les patronages et les centres sociaux, François Rousseau poursuit ses travaux sur les associations d’éducation populaire. À travers l’observation de nombreuses associations locales et d’une fédération nationale : la Fédération Léo-Lagrange, cette recherche vise à identifier comment sont gérées les initiatives collectives prises par des militants dans le secteur à but non lucratif. De l’artisan social à l’entrepreneur social, reste-t-il une place pour le projet associatif ? La problématique relevée par les premiers travaux apparaissait comme un noeud gordien : le développement des initiatives éducatives des associations, d’une part, leur reconnaissance par les pouvoirs publics, d’autre part, conduisent à une crise de sens (cf. Recma, n° 279, janvier 2001) dans laquelle on ne sait pas qui instrumentalise. Cet article prolonge la réflexion en proposant une grille de lecture qui autorise le dépassement du conflit.

Abstract
Having studied youth clubs and social centers, the author of this article expands his research to encompass associations for worker education. Through observing a large number of local associations and one national federation (the Leo Lagrange federation), this study aims at identifying how collective initiatives set up by activists in the non-profit sector are managed. In the evolution from social artisans to social entrepreneurs, is there room left for associations? The issues raised in the first studies seemed to be a gordian knot. The development of educational initiatives by associations and their legal recognition by government at the same time caused a conflict of purpose (see Recma no. 279) in which it was hard to tell who was using whom. This article takes the thinking on this subject a step further by offering an analysis in which this apparent opposition can be overcome.
