Résumé

Il est généralement admis que la Révolution française a donné un réel coup de frein au développement de l’association, la loi Le Chapelier du 14 juin 1791 venant sanctionner toute forme de corporations au nom des principes de liberté et d’égalité. L’association s’est-elle pour autant vu nier toute légitimité par la Révolution française ? L’article montre que les hommes de 1789, tout en critiquant vivement les organisations associatives, n’ont pas totalement exclu l’idée d’association. Apparaissant comme une entrave au libéralisme économique et à la volonté de faire de la nation un grand tout, l’association a certes été remise en cause tant d’un point de vue économique que politique, ne vivant plus que sous une forme clandestine durant un siècle. Mais l’association a aussi été mobilisée par les révolutionnaires au nom de sa capacité à produire et à renforcer le sentiment de fraternité, élément indispensable pour faire nation. Plus qu’une négation, l’oeuvre révolutionnaire a, pour l’auteur, conduit à la régénération de l’association, régénération qui marquera sa conceptualisation au XIX^e siècle.

Abstract

It is widely accepted that the French Revolution significantly restricted the growth of associations. In the name of liberty and equality, the Le Chapelier Law of 14 June 1791 prohibited all forms of corporations. However, does this mean that associations were denied all legitimacy by the French Revolution? The article shows that although the revolutionaries strongly disapproved of associations, they were not entirely opposed to the idea of associations. Seen as an obstacle to market freedom and the determination to create national unity, associations were criticized on both economic and political grounds and only existed clandestinely for a century. Yet associations were also called upon by the revolutionaries because of their ability to create and strengthen a feeling of fraternity, which was essential for building a nation. More than a negation, the Revolution, according to the author, led to a regeneration of associations, which would have a significant impact on the theories about them in 19th century.
