Abstract
Ever since The Sound Pattern of English, generative phonology has become the dominant model. However, the issues raised in recent generative work are often far removed from the preoccupations of phonologists in the post-SPE phase. At the same time, a number of concepts, ideas and problems appear to be of recurrent interest, and it is a vexed question whether or not there is real continuity. Our own approach stresses the idea of phonology as a cumulative discipline and thus we present a historical and critical overview. The rise of the concept of ‘constraint’, now at the core of phonological theory, is explained, illustrated and evaluated on the basis of two models: the Theory of Constraints and Repair Strategies (TCRS) and Optimality Theory (OT).
