Abstract
The goal of this article is to demonstrate the fundamental role of passion for various life activities in the attainment of optimal functioning. To this end, the Dualistic Model of Passion (Vallerand, 2010, 2015; Vallerand et al., 2003) and the concept of Optimal Functioning in Society (Vallerand, 2013) are presented. Furthermore, various studies underscoring the adaptive role of one type of passion (harmonious) and the less adaptive, and sometimes maladaptive role, of the other type (obsessive), in the attainment of Optimal Functioning in Society, are presented. Conclusions and future research avenues are also presented.
