The optimal use of ozonation as a pretreatment process prior to biological treatment of Ohio River water was investigated at both the bench (batch) and pilot-plant (continuous flow) scale. The study focused on disinfection by-products (DBPs) and DBP precursor compounds and on the production of biologically stable water. Biotreatment was achieved using a bench-scale fixed-film reactor with sand acclimated to the raw Ohio River water.

Ozonation was found to create a number of aldehydes, in particular formaldehyde, methyl glyoxal, glyoxal and acetaldehyde. With the exception of formaldehyde, a plateau in the aldehyde yield occurred at an ozone to total organic carbon (03/TOC) ratio of 0,7 mg/mg, while formaldehyde increased with increasing ozone dose. After biotreatment, the concentration of aldehydes were below 1 µg/1. Increasing ozone doses were also found to increase the assimilable organic carbon (AOC), by both NOX and P17 procedures, and the biodegradable dissolved organic carton (BDOC). The AOC values showed a maximum at about an 03/TOC ratio of 2 mg/mg, white the BDOC continued to increase with the highest ozone dose : an 03/TOC ratio of 2,8 mg/mg.

Both ozonation and biotreatment were fond to decrease the chlorine demand by up to 75 % for ozonation and 55 % for biotreatment.

Similar trends were found for the impact of ozonation and biotreatment on the precursor compounds for total organic halogen (TOX), total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) and total haloacetic acids (THAAs), as measured by the formation potential (FP) test : 12 mg/l chlorine, 7 days, 25 °C, 6.5-7.2 pH. An ozone dose of 0.4 03/DOC (mg/mg) decreased the TOXFP, TTHMFP and THAAFP by 28 %, 23 % and 33 %, respectively. Further increases in ozone only marginally increased the amount of the TOXFP and TTHMFP removed, white a maximum removal of 53 % of the THAAFP occurred at 03/DOC ratio of 0.87 mg/mg. Biotreatment of the nonozonated samples yielded 39 %, 38 % and 73 % removal of the TOXFP, TTHMFP and THAAFP, respectively. Biotreatment of the ozonated sample yielded a 30 to 50 % reduction in TOXFP and TTHMFP, while a constant level of 30 to 40 µg/l of THAAFP was achieved. Chloropicrin formation potential increased with ozone dose, but subsequent biotreatment reduced it to below 0.2 µg/l.

Ozonation was Pound to oxidize chorine demand and the precursors for TOX, THM and HAAs. However, it created chloropicrin precursors, aldehydes and other biodegradable organic matter. Biotreatment was found to further reduce the chlorine demand, the precursors for TOX, THMs and HAAs and reduce the ozone created disinfection by-products.

L'objectif de ce projet, commun à l'Agence Américaine pour la Protection de l'Environnement (USEPA) et l'Université de Cincinnati, est d'optimiser l'usage de la préozonation associée à des procédés biologiques pour le traitement de l'eau de la rivière Ohio en vue de produire une eau biologiquement stable, d'éliminer une partie importante de la demande en chlore, et de réduire le potentiel de formation des sous-produits de la disintection. Ce projet a été conduit à l'échelle pilote et à l'échelle du laboratoire. Pour le traitement biologique, des bioréacteurs, contenant un film biologique sur un sable acclimaté aux eaux de la rivière Ohio, ont été utilisé.

Une attention particulière a été portée à l'étude des sous-produits de la disinfection (DBPs) et de leurs précurseurs.

Les résultats de l'ozonation ont démontré la formation d'aldéhydes : formaidéhyde, méthyl glyoxal, glyoxal et acétaldéhyde. A l'exception du formaldéhyde, les aldéhydes augmentent avec l'augmentation de la dose d'ozone, puis se stabilisent à un rapport d'ozone/carbone organique total (O₃/COT) de 0,7 mg/mg. La formaldéhyde continue à augmenter proportionnellement aux doses d'ozone. Après traitement biologique, la concentration en aldéhydes diminue au dessous de 1 µg/l.

L'augmentation de la dose d'ozone augmente le carbone organique assimilable (COA), (COA P17 ou COA-NOX), ainsi que le carbone organique dissous biodégradable (CODE). Le COA atteint un maximum pour une dose O₃/COT de 2 mg/mg, alors que le COU continue à augmenter avec l'augmentation de la dose d'ozone jusqu'à une dose O₃/COT de 3 mg/mg.

La demande en chlore est réduite par les deux traitements, soit l'ozonation soit les procédés biologiques, respectivement de 75 % par l'ozonation et 55 % par les traitements biologiques.

Des résultats similaires ont été trouvés en ce qui concerne l'effet des différentes doses d'ozone et des traitements biologiques sur les précurseurs des composés organiques halogénés totaux (TOX), les trihalométhanes (THMs) et les acides acétiques halogénés (HAAs). Les précurseurs sont mesurés par le potentiel de formation (FP), (conditions expérimentales : 12 mg/l de chlore, 7 jours de contact, 25 °C et pH 6,5 - 7,2). A une dose d'O₃/COD de 0,4 mg/mg, les TOXFP, les THMFP et les HAAFP sont diminué de 28 %, 23 %, et 33 % respectivement. L'abattement des TOXFP et des THMFP continue légèrement avec une augmentation de la dose d'ozone, alors que les HAAFP sont diminués de façon plus marquée avec une dose d'O₃/COD de 0,87 mglmg. Avec le traitement biologique et même sans préozonation, les TOXFP, les THMFP et les HAAFP diminuent de 39 %, 38 %, et 73 % respectivement. Avec le couplage de l'ozonation et le traitement biologique, les TOXFP et les THMFP sont diminués de 30 à 50 %. Les HAAFP se stabilisent entre 30 et 40 µg/l pour toutes les doses étudiées.

Le potentiel de formation de chloropicrine augmente par l'ozonation mais est réduit de suite par le traitement biologique, jusqu'à moins de 0,2 µg/l.

Donc, pour éliminer les sous-produits de la disinfection, la concentration optimale d'ozone pour l'eau de la rivière Ohio serait entre 0,6 à 1,0 mg/mg (O₃/COT).

En conclusion, l'ozonation diminue la demande en chlore ainsi que les précurseurs des composés organiques halogénés (TOX, THM et HAA). Par contre, l'ozonation produit des autres sous-produits comme les aldéhydes et le chloropicrine et augmente le COA et le COD biodégradable, qui sert par la suite de substrat aux microorganismes. Les procédés biologiques sont efficaces pour diminuer les sous-produits d'oxydation, la demande en chlore et les précurseurs des composés organiques halogénés (TOX, THM et HAA).

Cet abattement permettra l'application de moins de chlore pour maintenir un résiduel dans le réseau et permettra aux usines d'atteindre des normes plus sévères que celles qui sont en effet maintenant.

Using small sand filets under well defined laboratory conditions, filtration experiments were performed with tap water supplemented with acetate. The objective of these experiments was to determine the effect of different acetate concentrations on (i) the removal of easily assimilable organic carbon (AOC) in the filter (ii), the clogging of the tiller and (iii) the bacteriological quality of the filtrate.

The results of the experiments revealed that the reduction capacity of biological filtration processes for acetate is relatively high. Acetate removal resulted in an increased microbiological activity in the top layer (< 1cm) of the filter bed and accumulation of bacterial matter was observed at an influent AOC concentration as low as 0.005 mg of ac-C eq/l. Clogging of the filter bed occurred at an influent acetate concentration of 0.01 mg C/l. Based on these observations it was concluded that the AOC concentration of water used for infiltration in recharge wells should be less thon 0.01 mg ac-C eq/l. This level is similar to the level advised for biologically-stable drinking water.

A linear relationship was found between the acetate removal in the experimental filters and the colony count in the filtrate. It was recommended that the AOC load in the final filtration process in water treatment therefore should be limited to prevent high colony counts in the filtrate, thus leading to the use of post disinfection.

Ces dix dernières années, les méthodes permettant de déterminer la concentration des composés organiques assimilables par les bactéries dans de l'eau potable ont suscité de plus en plus d'intérêt envers les possibilités de prévision et de contrôle de la croissance des bactéries pendant le stockage et la distribution. La détermination dite "COA" (carbone organique aisément assimilable) introduite par VAN DER KOOIJ et. al. (1982) a été développée et appliquée dans le but de surveiller les concentrations de COA pendant le traitement, le stockage et la distribution. Sur la base des résultats, il a été établi un critère pour de l'eau potable biologiquement stable (VAN DER KOOIJ et HIJNEN, 1990). Ce critère exerce une influence sur la conception du traitement de l'eau. Ceci étant, il convient de porter davantage d'attention à l'effet des processus de traitement - et plus particulièrement des processus de filtration - sur la concentration de COA.

Des expériences de filtration ont été effectuées sur de petits filtres à sable, dans des conditions de laboratoire bien déterminées. L'objectif de ces expériences consistait à déterminer (I) l'élimination du carbon organique aisément assimilable (COA) dans le filtre, pour des concentrations d'eaux affluentes différentes, (II) l'effet produit sur l'engorgement du filtre et (III) la qualité bactériologique du filtrat.

De l'acétate a été ajouté à l'eau d'entrée des filtres en tant que modèle de substrat, dans une gamme de concentrations allant de 0,01 à 1 mg/l C. L'eau fournie était de l'eau potable préfiltrée à faible teneur en COA (0,005 mg ac-C eq/l). Au cours du temps de fonctionnement, la concentration de COA ainsi que le nombre de colonies dénombrées dans l'eau ont été contrôlés, de même que la perte de charge de la couche filtrante. A l'expiration du temps de fonctionnement, la concentration de matière bactérienne a été déterminée dans le sable des filtres.

Dans les filtres à sable dont le temps de contact du lit vide était de 10 minutes, les concentrations d'acétate (S_ac) inférieures ou égales à 0,25 mg/1 C ont été totalement éliminées. La réduction de COA pour les valeurs Sac de 0,5 et de 1,0 mg/l C atteignait 90 %. Il en a été conclu que les processus de filtration biologique peuvent fort bien être appliqués pour l'élimination de composés organiques aisément assimilables, tels l'acétate et l'éthanol qui sont fréquemment utilisés dans les processus d'élimination biologique des nitrates au cours du traitement de l'eau potable.

La capacité d'élimination de l'acétate, offerte par les filtres à sable expérimentaux, était élevée par comparaison avec la réduction de COA observée dans le cas des filtres à sable utilisés pour la production d'eau potable à partir d'une eau de surface (VAN DER KOOIJ, 1984). La teneur en COA du filtrat dépassait le critère applicable à l'eau potable biologiquement stable, c'est-à-dire 0,01 mg ac-C eq/l, pour des charges volumique d'acétate (LV_ac), relevées sur les filtres à sable expérimentaux, supérieures à 1600 mg ac-C/(m³.h). La charge volumique critique en COA des filtres à sable, utilisés dans les installations de traitement citées plus haut, au-dessus de laquelle la teneur en COA du filtrat dépasse de critère, est estimée à environ 100 mg COA-C/(m³.h).

Ces résultats indiquent que l'acétate est éliminé plus rapidement qu'une quantité équivalente de composés mesurée par détermination du COA.

Par suite de la consommation d'acétate, le nombre de bactéries présentes dans le lit filtrant s'est accru. On a constaté qu'un net rapport linéaire existait entre la concentration d'acétate, d'une part, et le nombre de colonies dénombrées (par boite) sur le sable à la surface du filtre, d'autre part. L'accumulation de bactéries a été observée, même pour une concentration de COA de 0,005 mg ac-C/l, tandis que l'engorgement des filtres se produisait sous une concentration d'acétate de 0,01 mg ac-C/l. Des concentrations accrues de carbone organique ont été mesurées sur le sable, dans les premiers millimètres d'épaisseur du lit filtrant. Les résultats obtenus à la suite d'études sur le terrain, relatives à l'infiltration d'eau dans les puits de recharge, ont montré que, pour des valeurs de COA inférieures à 0,01 mg ac-C eq/l, la durée de processus n'atteignait pas un an, du fait de l'engorgement observé dans le sous-sol. Par conséquent, ta concentration de carbone organique assimilable (COA) dans l'eau utilisée pour l'infiltration doit être inférieure à 0,01 mg ac-C eq/l afin d'éviter l'engorgement biologique. Un niveau de COA similaire a été conseillé pour l'eau potable bioiogiquement stable (VAN DER KOOIJ and HIJNEN, 1990).

La consommation d'acétate dans les filtres a eu comme autre conséquence l'accroissement du nombre de colonies hétérotrophes dénombrées dans l'eau, selon un rapport linéaire avec la concentration d'acétate dans l'eau affluente. Le nombre de colonies dénombrées présentes dans le filtrat s'est accru pour atteindre une valeur moyenne de 10⁴ cfu/ml, sous une concentration d'acétate de 0,068 mg ac-C/l (charge volumique d'acétate de 400 mg ac-C/(m³.h)). Au vu de ces résultats, il a été conclu que la charge volumique en COA d'une filtration finale dans une installation de traitement des eaux devrait être limitée, entre autre afin d'éviter le recours à une post-désinfection visant à réduire le nombre de germes hétérotrophes.

In drinking water production, filtration on granular activated carton (GAC) is generally used in order to remove by adsorption the dissolved organic matter. Nevertheless, the adsorption capacity of GAC is rapidly saturated and it is so necessary to regenerate the GAC. An interesting alternate has been applied in some treatment plants. It consists to use GAC filtration without regeneration taking benefit of the activity of the microbial community which colonize the GAC particles (RITTMAN and HUCK, 1989). In fact, this biological filtration offers the advantage to specially remove the biodegradable fraction of the dissolved organic carbon (BDOC), which is responsible for the problem of bacterial growth into the distribution networks.

The bacterial nature of the BDOC removal achieved by the biological filtration on GAC has been now clearly demonstrated (SERVAIS et al., 1991) and some important results of the functioning of these filters has been obtained in studies conducted on pilots filters (BOUILLOT et al., 1990; SERVAIS et al., 1992). These studies have for example shown that only a very small part of the bacterial biomass produced in the filter is exported with the outflow.

In the present study, biological filtration has been investigated in a full scale treatment line at Choisy-le-Roi in the Parisian suburbs and the results compared with those gained on pilot filters.

The working conditions of the three GAC filter studied are presented in table 1 and compared with those of pilot filters used in a previous study conducted al Neuilly-sur-Marne (table 2). The microbial colonization has been followed in two of the liners. If lasted roughly 3 months to reach biological equilibration, it corresponds to a water volume filtrated of 12 500 m³ per m³ of GAC. Efficiency of the removal during this period is presented in figure 2. Progressively, biological processes take turn with adsorption (fig. 1).

As already demonstrated by SERVAIS et al. (1992), the efficiency of biological filtration, calculated in percentage of BDOC removal, increases with increasing contact time whatever the filtration velocity could be in the range 2 m/h to 18 m/h (fig. 3). However, the percentage of BDOC, at similar temperature, is higher in the GAC filters at Choisy-le-Roi than at Neuilly-sur-Marne. The fixed bacterial biomass is also higher at Choisy-le-Roi (average 7.5 µgC/cm³) than at Neuilly-sur-Marne (average 2 µC/cm³).

Following during two years the functioning of the n° 56 and 38 filters (tables 3, 4 and fig. 5, 7), it seems that the global efficiency of filtration is better in 1990 than in 1989. This can be linked to the greater fluctuations in BDOC in the influent water in 1989 than in 1990, as shown on figure 8. Fluctuations in the quality of the influent water requires a period to reach the equilibrium during which the effluent is charchacterized by a lower quality (fig. 8). This period is longer at low temperature.

The mathematical modal based on the kinetics of the basic microbiological processes involved in biological filtration (the CHABROL model) has been previously developed (BILLEN et al., 1992) in order la simulate the performances of the filtration. It can be used to simulate the vertical profiles of BDOC and bacterial biomass in the filters of the Choisy-le-Roi treatment plant, with modifying only one parameter in the model, the average bacterial mortality “kd” (fig. 4). BDOC decreases versus empty bed contact time (EBCT) calculated by the modal are presented on figure 6 for the Choisy-le-Roi and Neuilly-sur-Marne treatment plants and for two temperatures.

From a management point of view, the minimum BDOC is reached for contact time between 15 and 20 minutes at Neuilly-sur-Marne, while at Choisy-le-Roi it is rather between 10 and 15 minutes.

In conclusion, BDOC measurements and CHABROL modal constitute powerful tools for management and design of biological GAC filters.

En production d'eau potable, la nature bactérienne de l'abattement du carbone organique dissous biodégradable (CODB) observé dans les filtres à charbon actif en grains (CAG) a été démontrée. Les performances de fonctionnement de ce type de contacteur biologique ont été principalement étudiées sur pilotes. Dans la présente étude, elles sont vérifiées et transposées en condition d'exploitation sur une usine de production d'eau potable de la. banlieue parisienne. La colonisation bactérienne du CAG a été suivie et montre que l'équilibre biologique est atteint après filtration d'environ 12500m³ d'eau/m³ de CAG. Durant cette phase de colonisation, la biodégradation se substitue progressivement à l'adsorption pour abattre le COD. Après colonisation, l'efficacité des filtres biologiques, exprimée en terme d'abattement de CODB, est fonction du temps de contact quelle que soit la vitesse de filtration (dans la gamme de 2 à 18 m/h). Les résultats de suivis de deux filtres sur deux ans montrent que l'efficacité a été globalement meilleure en 1989 qu'en 1990, cette différence s'explique par les fluctuations plus importantes de CODB dans l'influent en 1989. Un modèle mathématique, établi à partir des équations cinétiques des processus bactériens dans les filtres à CAG (modèle CHABROL), développé sur base d'observations antérieures, permet de simuler correctement les observations faites au cours de la présente étude. Avec la mesure du CODB, le modèle CHABROL constitue un outil très bien adapté pour contrôler les performances des contacteurs biologiques. Ils permettent, entre autre, de définir le temps de contact optimal de l'eau dans le filtre en fonction d'une température et d'une qualité d'eau donnée dans l'influent et d'une qualité d'eau souhaitée dans l'effluent.

Cet article rapporte les résultats de campagnes de mesure de Carbone Organique Dissous Biodégradable sur 2 sites en exploitation. Les mesures de CODB ont été effectuées par la méthode rom et tom. La première partie de l'étude concerne le site de KERNE UHEL. Il s'agit d'une usine de traitement d'eau de surface comprenant une étape d'ozonation suivie d'une filtration sur CAG récemment mise en place. L'ozonation provoque une augmentation de CODB de 0,3 à 0,6 mg O. Le CAG élimine le CODB : on a 100 % d'élimination lorsqu'il est neuf, et jusqu'à 80 % d'élimination sur un pilote après 1 an de fonctionnement. Dans le réseau, an observe une diminution du CODB lorsque la concentration de celui-ci est de 0,6 - 0,7 mg 1^-1 dans l'eau traitée, cela malgré la présence de chlore libre. Lorsque le CODB de l'eau traitée est de 0,14 mgl^-1 (après mise en route de la filière CAG) l'évolution dans le réseau est beaucoup plus difficile à mesurer (0,14 < CODB < 0,27 mg l^-1). Le deuxième site étudié est le réseau de VIENNE-BRIANCE. 4 campagnes de mesures effectuées entre Juin et Août 1991 sur 10 points de prélèvement, montrent qu'il y a consommation de CODB, surtout en période chaude et aux extrémités du réseau. On a également des relargages de CODB, un nombre significatif de valeurs se trouvant au-dessus de la valeur maximale observée à l'usine. On remarque une grande variabilité des valeurs sur le réseau (< 0,1 à 0,6 mg l^-1) en comparaison avec la gamme de valeurs obtenues sur l'eau traitée (0,21- 0,30 mg l^-1).

This study reports results of BDOC measurements from two experimental sites. BDOC was measured by JORET and LEVI’S method, in which a sample is incubated at 20 °C with colonised sand. Dissolved Organic Carbon is evaluated every day, and BDOC calculated as Initial DOC minus the minimal DOC observed during incubation. Reliability of this method was verified by measuring BDOC of standard acetate solutions. We obtained coefficients warrying between 2 and 5 % for BDOC about 1,0 mg l^-1.

The first part of the study concerns KERNE UHEL treatment plant and its distribution network. BDOC was measured on sand filtered water, ozonated water, GAC filtered water, treated water and on five reservoirs along the network. Results from the treatment plant show that ozonation generates BDOC (increase of 0.3 to 0.6 mg l^-1) GAC filtration allows very low levels of BDOC to be obtained when filtration start up (< 0.1 mg l^-1) On GAC pilot plant, BDOC removed was between 50 % and 80 % after one year. In distribution, BDOC concentration 'decreased tram 0,6 - 0,7 mg l^-1 to 0,2 - 0,4 mgl^-1, during an estimated residence lime of 190 h. When the entire GAC filters were commissioned on the treatment plant, treated water BDOC was equal to 0.14 mg l^-1; and between 0.14 and 0.27 mg l^-1 in the network. This shows that BDOC reduction in the treatment plant reduces its evolution in the distribution system.

The second part of the study was conducted on the distribution network of VIENNE BRIANCE, which is supplied with water from the river VIENNE. This water is treated by coagulation, settlement and sand filtration. This network is very extensive and provides water to more than 20 rural villages. Ten points were selected on the network, and were monitored for BDOC, chemical and bacteriological parameters from June to August 1991. Results of physico chemical analyses showed variation of temperature (-3 °C to + 3 °C in the network compared to the treated water at the station); pH (slight variations < 0,5 pH units) and turbidity (increase in the network with peak values as high as 3,5 NTU). Treatment plant's BDOC values were between 0.2 - 0.4 mg l^-1. In the network, a great variation is observed : < 0.1 to 0.6 mg l^-1. This shows that microbiological activity in the system causes BDOC consumption, but also BDOC is released kilo the water. Heterotrophic bacteria coutils increases during distribution and filamentous fungi have also been isolated in this network.

The results of this study pointed out the difficulty to interprete BROC evolution in the network, especially when the hydraulic of the system is not well understood.

The deterioration of water quality in distribution systems due to bacterial regrowth is, at the present time, a major concern of drinking water producers. In this context, a good knowledge of the factors controlling bacterial development is required; the aim of the present study is to understand the rote of biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) in the bacterial dynamics of the distribution system.

This paper discusses the results obtained in a study carried out in order to assess the dynamics of biodegradable dissolved organic carbon and suspended bacteria in the water distribution system of the Northern Parisian suburbs lad by the Méry-sur-Oise treatment plant.

The results show clearly that a significant decrease in BDOC occurs within the smallest pipes, when the BDOC level in the finished water is higher than about 0.20 mgC.L^-1. However, no decrease in BDOC is observed when the BDOC in the finished water is lower than 0.16 mgC.L^-1. The bacterial abundance in the distribution system is primarily linked to the absence of free chicane. Temperature and BDOC concentration in the finished water are also major controlling factors of bacterial numbers. Bacterial growth rates are in the range 0.005 to 0.1 h^-1 in the absence of free chlorine, the highest of these values are in the same range as the growth rates measured for bacteria in natural aquatic ecosystems. Fixed biomass to the inner pipes surface are in the range 0.25 to 0.65 µgC.cm^-2 and the average growth rate of fixed bacteria seems to be roughly in the same order of magnitude as the average growth rate of the suspended bacteria.

A model of the dynamics of BDOC and bacteria in distribution network, incorporating the knowledge gained from this and previous studies concerning the control of bacterial activity by dissolved organic matter, is presented. It involves a mathematical representation of the kinetics of bacterial adsorption-desorption processes, bacterial attachment, bacterial utilization of biodegradable dissolved organic matter and impact of chlorine on free and fixed bacteria. It allows simulation of the impact of reducing the BDOC in the finished water on processes associated with bacterial regrowth in the distribution network..

La dégradation de la qualité de l'eau dans les réseaux de distribution, due à la reviviscence bactérienne, est, à l'heure actuelle, un souci majeur pour les producteurs d'eau potable. Dans ce contexte, une bonne connaissance des facteurs de contrôle du développement bactérien dans ce type de milieu s'avère nécessaire. Le but de la présente étude est de comprendre le rôle du carbone organique dissous biodégradable (CODB) dans la dynamique bactérienne en réseau de distribution. Cet article présente les résultats d'une étude en cours, lancée à l'initiative du Syndicat des Eaux de l'Ile de France, sur le réseau de distribution de la banlieue nord de Paris alimenté par l'usine de production de Méry-sur-Oise.

Le CODB a été déterminé par la méthode de bioessai proposée par SERVAIS et al. (1987, 1989). La biomasse bactérienne libre a été estimée par microscopie à épifluorescence après coloration des bactéries à l'acridine orange, et la méthode d'incorporation de thymidine tritiée utilisée en écologie bactérienne a été adaptée, afin d'estimer la production bactérienne des bactéries présentes dans l'eau du réseau. De plus, la biomasse et l'activité des bactéries fixées ont été étudiées. Une méthode d'estimation de la biomasse, basée sur la mesure de l'activité exoprotéolytique potentielle des bactéries, a été développée. Pour l'estimation de la production bactérienne, la méthode d'incorporation de thymidine tritiée a été adaptée pour être utilisée pour les bactéries fixées.

Les résultats obtenus mettent clairement en évidence une décroissance significative de la teneur en CODB dans les canalisations de faible diamètre dans la plupart des situations. Lorsque l'on porte la décroissance du CODB entre l'eau refoulée et l'eau présente dans les canalisations de faible diamètre en fonction du CODB dans l'eau refoulée, une corrélation significative est observée (fig. 1); l'intersection de la droite de corrélation avec l'abscisse indique la présence d'un seuil (environ 0,16 mgC.L^-1) en-dessous duquel aucune décroissance de CODB n'est observée. Ce résultat, qui doit encore être confirmé, est important en vue de définir un objectif à atteindre en fin de filière, en terme de teneur en CODB.

Dans l'eau refoulée, l'abondance bactérienne est proche de 1 x 104 cellules par mL. Dans le réseau de distribution, elle est toujours supérieure avec des valeurs observées allant jusqu'à 7 x 10⁵ bact.mL^-1; elle semble surtout liée à l'absence d'un résiduel de chlore libre (fig. 2). La température et la concentration en CODB dans l'eau refoulée sont aussi déterminantes comme le montre la figure 3 où l'abondance bactérienne dans les canalisations de faibles dia-mètres a été portée en fonction de la température pour deux gammes de concentration en CODB dans l'eau refoulée. Les taux de croissance des bactéries (calculés à .partir des estimations de production bactérienne et de biomasse) sont dans la gamme 0,005 à 0,1 h^-1 (fig. 4), en l'absence de chlore libre ce qui correspond à des temps de génération compris entre 7 et 140 heures. La température semble fixer la valeur maximale du taux de croissance, sous ce maximum une large gamme de valeurs est observée traduisant la variabilité des conditions nutritionnelles. Les plus hauts taux de croissance observés dans le réseau sont proches des taux de croissance de bactéries mesurés dans les milieux aquatiques naturels.

Les résultats obtenus sur les bactéries fixées montrent une biomasse bactérienne fixée dans la gamme 0,25 à 0,65 µgC.cm^-2, ce qui correspond à une abondance de 1 x 10⁷ à 2,6 x 10⁷ bact.cm^-2 (tableau 1). Ainsi donc, dans une canalisation de 100mm de diamètre, on peut dire que la biomasse fixée est, en moyenne, approximativement de 50 à 75 fois plus élevée que la biomasse moyenne des bactéiesJibres (2 x 10⁵ bact.mL^-1) (tableau 2). Le taux de croissance des bactéries fixées apparaît du même ordre de grandeur que celui des bactéries en suspension. Ceci signifie que dans un réseau de distribution, l'essentiel de la production de biomasse bactérienne s'effectue sur les parois des canalisations, les bactéries en suspension résultant principalement d'un décrochage de bactéries.

Un modèle mathématique de la dynamique du CODB et des bactéries dans les réseaux de distribution, incluant les connaissances acquises concernant le contrôle de l'activité bactérienne par la matière organique dissoute, est actuellement développé (fig. 5). Il inclut une représentation mathématique des cinétiques des processus d'adsorption-désorption des bactéries (tableau 4), de fixation des bactéries, d'utilisation de la matière organique biodégradable et de la croissance bactérienne (tableau 3), ainsi que de l'impact du chlore libre sur les bactéries libres et fixées (fig. 6). Bien que préliminaire, il permet de simuler l'évolution longitudinale de la biomasse bactérienne libre et fixée, du CODB et du taux de chlore libre dans le cas simplifié d'une canalisation de diamètre fixé parcourue par un flux d'eau à vitesse constante (fig. 7). Une de ses applications permet de simuler l'impact de la teneur en CODB de l'eau injectée dans le réseau sur les biomasses libres et fixées (fig. 8).

L'étude a permis de suivre l'évolution des caractéristiques physico-chimiques et microbiologiques des eaux dans un réseau de distribution expérimental de taille industrielle, afin de comparer d'une part l'effet du chlore et de la monochloramine sur la biomasse présente dans le système à l'équilibre et d'autre part d'établir des relations quantitatives entre prolifération bactérienne, oxydant et matière organique biodégradable.

Dès les premières heures de transit dans le réseau, une consommation des oxydants est constatée, avec toutefois une plus grande stabilité de la monochloramine (vitesse de consommation de 0,05 mgCl₂ l^-1h^-1 et 0,02 mgCl₂ l^-1h^-1 respectivement pour le chlore et la monochloramine).

Même en présence d'un désinfectant résiduel, il est possible de noter une accumulation de bactéries-à ta surface des tuyaux de distribution (10⁵ à 10⁶ cellules. cm^-2, dont environ 1 % est cultivable sur gélose) qui augmente avec la diminution de concentration du désinfectant résiduel. Les relations logarithmiques entre densité cellulaire (phase eau ou biofilm) et oxydant résiduel montrent d'une part que pour inactiver totalement les bactéries en suspension dans l'eau il convient de maintenir une chloration en continu avec un résiduel constant supérieur ou égal à 0,5 mgCl₂ l^-1 et, d'autre part que les chloramines sont au moins 2,5 fois moins efficaces que le chlore, même vis-à-vis des bactéries fixées.

La présence de matière organique biodégradable dans les eaux explique la prolifération des bactéries dans le système de distribution. Ainsi une concentration additionnelle de 100 µg.l^-1 de carbone organique dissous biodégradable (CODB) dans l'eau entrant dans le réseau de distribution occasionne en 24 heures et à 20°C une augmentation du nombre de bactéries fixées (+7,5.10⁵ cellules.cm^-2) ou en suspension (+ 4.10⁴ cellules.ml^-1) dans le réseau de distribution, à l'équilibre, déjà largement colonisé par des micro-organismes.

Ainsi le contrôle de la fraction biodégradable de la matière organique apparaît toujours comme un objectif primordial.

This study was carried out in order to evaluate the variations in the physicochemical characteristics of the water in an experimental distribution system.

The primary objectives of the study were :

- to compare the disinfectant efficiency of chlorine and monochloramine

- to establish quantitative correlations among bacterial density, concentration of residual disinfectant, and concentration of biodegradable organic matter.

The finished waters were obtained from a water treatment pilot plant characterized by : prechlorination (average treatment rate : 1.4 mgCl₂ l^-1 and residual alter sand filtration : 0.08 mgCl₂ l^-1), coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation (FeCl₃ treatment rate : 30 to 60 mg l^-1 adjusted to the raw water turbidity below 0.3 NTU), sand filtration (filtration rate : 6 h^-1) and post-disinfection with chloramine (average treatment rate : 1.8 mgCl₂ l^-1) or chloramine (average treatment rate : 1.66 mgCl₂ l^-1). The concentrations of post-disinfectant used were chosen in order to maintain chlorine at 0.2 to 0.5 mgCl₂ l^-1 and monochloramine at 1 mgC₂ l^-1 after the first 24 hours residence time in the experimental distribution system.

The experimental distribution system is composed of three parallel loops connected in series (31 m length, 100 mm diameter, cement lined cast iron, water velocity : 1m s^-1). The configuration and operation of the system permitted a residence time of 24 hours in each loop (that is 72 hours for the whole system). Appropriate sample tap locations facilitated removal of bulk water samples. Special sampling parts also permitted sampling of cement coupons for determination of attached biofilm.

The measured parameters were : residual oxidant (DPD method), DOC, BDOC (28 days of incubation at 28 °C with a bacterial inoculum), cell density in the bulk water phase (CFU ml^-1) and in the biofilm (CFU cm^-2) after 15 days of incubation at 20-22 °C. Total cells were enumerated using the epifluorescence direct count technique.

For each experiment, all the sampling sequences were carried out on each of three days, after quasi steady-state was achieved in the system (4 to 6 weeks after starting each experiment). The data were analysed in order to characterize the treated and distributed waters; the results discussed here are based on the averages of the measured parameters tram the water samples and biofilm samples taken after the system achieved quasi steady-state.

Characteristics of the treated waters

The treated waters were characterized by important variations at the DOC, BDOC and cell density. For example, the concentrations of DOC showed a seasonal variation ranging from 0.8 to 1.3 mg Cl^-1 in winter to 1.6 to 2.6 mg Cl^-1 in summer.

The treated waters contained approximately the same concentrations of residual disinfectant, averaging 1.6 mgCl² l^-1 for chlorine and 1.5 mgCl² l^-1 for monochloramine.

However, a significant difference cell density was found between the two post-disinfectants. Cell densities by the epifluorescence direct count technic were 1.6 x 10³ ml^-1 (0.3 % of CFU ml^-1) with chlorine and 6.3 x 10⁴ ml^-1 (0.03 % of CFU ml^-1) with monochloramine. The difference on cell density between the post-chlorination and the post-chloramination treatments has been observed systematically, and may be explained either as cellular lysis with chlorine or an interference when using epifluorescence counting for chlorinated waters.

Characteristics of the distributed waters

Whatever the season, depletion of oxidant (chlorine or monochloramine), and elimination of dissolved organic matter (DOC, BDOC) occured during the first hours of circulation of water in the distribution system. The net result was an increase in bacterial cell density.

During the first hours of circulation of the waters in the distribution system, depletion of the disinfectant occured. Depletion was more rapid for chlorine (-0.05 mgCl₂ l^-1 h^-1) titan for monochloramine (-0.02 mgCl₂ l^-1 h^-1), winch is considered more stable titan chlorine.

Even in the presence of a residual disinfectant in the distribution system, microorganisms are present in the water phase (10⁴ to 10⁶ cells ml^-1 by epifluorescence direct count; 1 % CFU ml^-1 after 15 days of incubation at 20-22 °C) and in the biofilm (10⁵ to 10⁶ cells cm^-2 by epifluorescence direct count; 1 % CFU ml^-1 after 15 days of incubation at 20-22 °C). The bacterial density increased white the disinfectant residual decreased. The apparent growth rate of the attached biomass (µfix) in loop 2 of the chlorinated distribution system (equivalent to 48 hours detention), was close to the µfix calculated for loop 2 of the chloraminated distribution system : the values were 0.0043 h^-1 and 0.005 h^-1 respectively.

In addition, the change in the organic matter (expressed as DOC) occured in two steps :

- a slight increase in DOC during the 24 first hours of residence time (loop 1), when increased residual disinfectant were present.

- a bacterial consumption of DOC after 24 hours of residence time (loops 2 and 3), even in the presence of small concentrations of disinfectants.

In loop 2 (48 hours residence time of the water in the system; chlorine : 0.01 mgCl₂ l^-1, chloramine : 0.3 mgCl₂ l^-1 h^-1), the rates of DOC elimination averaged 13 mgCl₂ l^-1 h^-1 and 0.42, mgCl₂ l^-1 h^-1, respectively in the chlorinated and chloraminated distribution systems. This decrease in DOC concentrations was related to the increase in bacterial density.

Relationships between cell density, oxidant and organic matter

Linear relationships between the concentration of residual oxidant (chlorine or monochloramine) and the cell density in the water phase or in the biofilm show that :

- whichever oxidant was used, the pipe loop sections without residual disinfectants were characterized by about 5 x 10⁶ attached cells per cm² (4 to 10% were able to grow on agar medium in 15 days at 20-22 °C) and by 4 x 10⁵ planktonic cells per ml (1 % CFU ml^-1);

- consistently, in the sections of the system with a residual disinfectant, the bacteria (CFU and epilluorescence counting) in the water phase were more sensitive to the residual disinfectant (chlorine or monochloramine) than the bacteria attached to the pipe walls (biofilm).

However, there was a difference in effectiveness between the two disinfectants; chlorine was more efficient in controlling planktonic bacteria and biofilm bacteria than was monochloramine.

For example, to achieve complete inactivation of the planktonic bacteria (CFU ml^-1) a constant chlorine residual of 0.5 mgCl₂ l^-1 was required throughout the whole distribution system, compared to 2.5 times more chloramine to achieve the same efficiency.

Finally, with equivalent concentrations of residual disinfectant, the microbiological quality of the chlorinated distribution waters was better than that of the chloraminated distribution waters.

From loop to loop, linear relationships between ∆DOC and cell density pointed out that the presence of biodegradable organic matter can explain the bacterial proliferation in the distribution system. For example, a concentration of BDOC as low as 0.1 mgC l^-1 resulted in an increase in the cell density : an additional accumulation of 7.5 x 10⁵ attached cells cm^-2 and 4 x 10⁴ planktonic cells ml^-1 was observed in the experimental distribution system at quasi steady-state.

Consequently, the control of the biodegradable organic carbon remains one of the prime objectives in order to achieve biologically stable distribution waters.

Biological treatment was examined for production of biologically stable water, increase disinfectant stability, and reduced formation of disinfection by products. Monitoring of assimilable organic carbon (AOC) levels in the effluent of the Swimming River Treatment Plant (SRTP) showed that values >100 µg/L could be related to the occurrence of coliform bacteria in the distribution system. A treatment goal of <100 µg/L was established for biologically active treatment processes. Granular activated carbon (GAC) filters were found to support a larger bacterial population, and thus, provide better biological removal of AOC and total organic carton (TOC). All biologically active filters showed good performance relative to effluent turbidity levels, and headloss development. Preozonation of raw water increased AOC levels an average of 2.3 fold, and always increased filter effluent AOC levels relative to nonozonated water. Application of free chlorine to GAC filters did not inhibit biological activity. Application of chloramines to GAC filters showed a slight inhibitory affect relative to free chlorine. Effluent AOC levels averaged 82 µg/L at an EBCT of 5 min, and decreased to an average of 57 µg/L at 20 min EBCT. EBCT did affect TOC removals, with efficiencies averaging 29, 33, 42, and 51 % removal at EBCTs of 5, 10, 15 and 20 min, respectively. Trihalomethane formation potentials (THMFP) were related to TOC levels. Processes Chat decreased TOC levels also decreased THMFP. A preozonated GAC/sand filter (EBCT 10 min) achieved an annual average 54 % removal of THMFP precursors. Post disinfection of biologically treated effluents reduced HPC bacterial counts by 2-2.5log₁₀. Post chlorination or chloramination of prechlorinated GAC/sand effluents resulted in a 20 %, or a 44 % (respectively) increase in AOC levels. Post disinfection of preozonated water resulted in small (<8%) AOC increases. Despite increases in AOC levels, prechlorinated water had lower AOC levels than preozonated water, even after post disinfection.

L'objectif de ce projet était de fournir un guide pratique de l'application des techniques de traitement biologique aux opérations de traitement actuel des eaux. Les études furent centrées sur la production d'une eau biologiquement équilibrée, sur la stabilité (l'équilibre) des désinfectants, et sur la formation moins importante de sous-produits désinfectants. Notamment, l'étude a montré que les procéssus biologiques peuvent satisfaire les besoins de la pratique aussi bien que les exigences régulatrices de l'industrie de l'eau.

Le système de surveillance et de contrôle des niveaux du carbone organique assimilable (COA) des éffluents de la "Swimming River Treatment Plant" a montré que des données >100 µq/L pourraient expliquer d'une part, l'apparition des bactéries conformes dans le système de distribution et d'autre part la transgression potentielle des règlements récemment révisés de la "Limite Maximum de Contaminants de Coliformes" des Etats-Unis. L'optimum du traitement a été établi à <100 µg/L pour les méthodes de traitement biologiquement activé.

Des études évaluant des genres de filtres différents ont démontré que des filtres de carbone granuleux actif (CGA) peuvent supporter une population bactérielle plus grande, et ainsi, permettre une meilleure supression biologique du COA et du carbone organique total (COT). Les filtres de carbone granuleux actif peuvent rester biologiquement actifs même à une basse température d'eau (<5 °C). Des filtres à lit profond de COA étaient un peu plus étficaces que les filtres constitués de COA et de sable pour la supression du COA et du COT. Toutefois, le meilleur résultat fut attribué à l'expérience mettant en oeuvre une plus grande période de temps de résidence en lit vide (TRLV). Tous les filtres biologiquement actifs ont démontré une bonne performance liée au niveau de turbidité de l'éffluent, à la suppression des parasites et à la diminution de la vitesse de l'écoulement de l'eau. Les résultats indiquent que les filtres biologiquement actifs devraient satisfaire les règlements de turbidité du Code de Traitement des Eaux de Surface (CTES) des États-Unis avec des longueur de filtres appropriées.

Un pré-traitement à l'ozone de l'eau crue a augmenté le niveau du COA d'une moyenne de 2,3 fois et a intensifié le niveau du COA de l'éffluent par rapport à l'eau non-pré-traitée à l'ozone. Parce que le CAG peut neutraliser rapidement le chlore libre, l'emploi de chlore libre aux filtres de CAG n'a pas empêché l'activité biologique. Les résultats obtenus indiquent que beaucoup de filtres conventionnels peuvent déjà achever une bonne suppression du COA. L'utilisation des chloramines aux filtres CAG a indiqué une légère activité inhibitrice en proportion de la teneur en chlore libre. La stabilité des résidus de chloramine permet au désinfectant de pénétrer le filtre et de maintenir des traces résiduelles dans l'éffluent provenant du filtre. Les niveaux bactériels hétérotrophes (HPC) dans les filtres pré-chloraminés étaient dix fois moindres que dans les filtres pré-chlorés ou pré-ozonés. TRLV n'avait qu'un effet réduit sur l'enlèvement du COA. Les niveaux de l'éffluent du COA draient en moyenne de 82 µg/là un TRLV de cinq minutes, et avaient diminués à une moyenne de 57 µg/Là un TRLV de vingt minutes. II n'est pas sûr que l'injection d'azote ou de phosphore dans les filtres pourrait permettre la suppression du COA. Le TRLV avait un effect sur l'elimination du COT, avec des rendements respectifs en moyennes de 29, 33, 42 et 51 % d'élimination pour des TRLVs de 5, 10, 15 et 20 minutes.

La formation potentielle de méthane tri-halogéné (FPMI est liée à la teneur en COT. Les processus qui réduisent la teneur en COT font aussi décroître le FPMTH. Un filtre de GAG/sable pré-ozoné (TRIV 10 min.) permettait une suppression moyenne annuelle de 54 % des éléments précurseurs de FPMTH. Les taux de FPMTH dans le filtre éffluent avait une moyenne de 99 µg/L (107, µg/L après les 60 premiers jours). En comparaison, les taux de FPMTH dans le SRTP etaient presque le double (178 µg/L).Une désinfection postérieure des éffluents traités biologiquement a réduit la flore bactérielle hétérotrophe d'un log₁₀ de 2 à 2,5. Le chlore libre (1 mg/L) a produit de meilleurs taux d'inactivité que les chloramines (2 mg/L) pré-formées dans un intervalle de 30 minutes. Un traitement postérieur au chlore ou à la chloramine des éffluents pré-chlorés d'un filtre CAG/sable a eu pour résultat une augmentation respective des niveaux de COA de 20 %, et de 44 %.

Une désinfection postérieure de l'eau pré-ozonée a pour résultat une faible (<8 %) augmentation de COA. Malgré les augmentations de la teneur en COA, l'eau pré-chlorée a des teneurs en COA plus faible que l'eau pré-ozonée, même après une désinfection postérieure.

La conclusion du rapport est que les absorbants des filtres de CAG/sable biologiquement actifs peuvent produire des éffluents d'une teneur en COA de <100 ug/L, d'une turbidité basse, avec des FPMTH réduite durant une période de traitement acceptable. Ce processus peut être facilement appliqué aux systèmes actuels de traitement des eaux. Un traitement biologique est présenté en tant que procédé pour satisfaire les demandes rigoureuses du traitement des eaux.

Cet article présente les résultats d'une étude sur le traitement par filtration sur charbon actif biologique (CAB), utilisé en usine de production d'eau potable en second étage de filtration, en aval d'une étape d'ozonation. L'objectif principal de cette étude était de caractériser la matière organique bioéliminée au cours de la filtration sur charbon actif afin d'obtenir une meilleure compréhension de l'abattement du carbone organique dissous (COD) et de la demande en chlore par ce procédé. Le carbone organique dissous biodégradable (CODB) éliminé au cours de ce traitement peut être corrélé à l'abattement de la demande en chlore et ce CODB présente une réactivité au chlore supérieure à celle du carbone organique réfractaire.

Le couplage de techniques d'ultrafiltration au suivi des différentes fractions en cours d'incubation en batch pendant 35 jours avec un inoculum de bactéries indigènes libres, permet de préciser la nature des molécules susceptibles d'être bioéliminées et d'appréhender leur impact sur la demande en chlore de l'eau issue du traitement biologique. La nature de la matière organique présente dans l'eau en amont des filtres varie considérablement au cours de l'année; ainsi, en été, une augmentation importante de la fraction de molécules de haute masse molaire (> 10000 daltons) est observée. La filtration biologique n'affecte pas de manière significative la répartition des différentes tailles de molécules et de petites molécules (< 1000 dallons) peuvent être difficiles à bioéliminer sur un filtre biologique.

The biodegradable organic fraction of the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is mainly responsible for growth of microorganisms in water distribution network. Utilisation of high chlorine dosages is often used for controlling this regrowth, but the presence of high contents of DOC results in a large chlorine demand and in the formation of undesirable by-products. Biological activated carbon (BAC) filtration can reduce the regrowth potential by removing biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) and some of the side effects of chlorination.

This paper presents results of a study performed at the Ste Rose water treatment plant (110 000 m3/d) situated in the city of Laval (Quebec - Canada) in order to get better understanding of the elimination of DOC and chlorine demand by the processes involved in biological filtration (combination of ozonation and granular activated carbon filtration). The plant has used BAC filtration at full scale since 1984 and this research was part of a large research effort to evaluate and optimize biological treatment for North American conditions (PRFVOST, 1991). Ozonation is applied al a dosage of approximately 1.5 mg/l adjusted to maintain an ozone residual of 0.4 mg/l after 8 minutes of contact. The carbon filters are equipped with 2 m of media and are operated al a rate of 5-10 m/h; sampling ports are available on 10 different depths in the bed.

The major objective of this study was to determine the parameters to optimize BDOC removal by BAC filtration in order to reduce the chlorine demand of the plant effluent. To achieve this, a number of water quality parameters were measured at different depths in the BAC filters : DOC, BDOC, short and long term chlorine demand, ammonia (fig. 1, 2, 3 and 4). A Dohrman DC 80 analyser was used for the determination of DOC. Chlorine demand is performed using a chlorination dosage adjusted by a ratio of 2 mg of chlorine per mg of DOC, incubation was done at pH 7 and 20 °C and residual chlorine is measured at different times by the DPD method. BDOC was measured at 20 °C by SERVAIS method (SERVAIS et al., 1987). Additional characterization of organic matter was performed by ultrafiltration (UF) in stirred cells (Amicon 8400) to identity the size of the molecules more likely to be eliminated.

Molecular size distributions of the dissolved organic matter of raw and treated water, determined using ultrafiltration, show large seasonal differences resulting in significant changes of DOC (table 1) and chlorine demand reduction (table 2). The fractioning by UF was performed on ozonated water and in BAC filtered water for various empty bed contact times (EBCT); it shows that BAC filtration does not affect significantly the distribution of the different sizes of molecules as measured through DOC evolution (fig. 8).

The removal of DOC in the BAC filters is associated with bacterial degradation as measured through BDOC (fig. 5). Monitoring of filters showed that BDOC removal is maintained (50 - 100 %) whatever the temperature (1 °C during 5 months in winter and sometimes as high as 28 °C in summer) and the organic composition of the ozonated water. The removal of BDOC is associated with a significant reduction at the short and long term chlorine demand (fig. 6). The results demonstrate that BDOC which is a part of DOC removed by biological filtration, is more reactive to chlorine than refractory carbon (fig. 7). However, if it is possible to correlate these two parameters for one type of water, no correlation could be established for the entire study because of the variations of chlorine reactivity of the refractory organic carbon.

The use of UF techniques, linked to the monitoring of various parameters (DOC, Marine demand) during a batch incubation of the various size fractions, enables us to precise their biodegradable character (fig. 9 and 10). Ozonated water was ultrafiltered and the different ultrafiltrates were incubated for 35 days; BDOC and chlorine demand were measured on samples taken from the incubation bottles at different times of incubation (fig. 11). The data indicate Mal the degree of biodegradability differs amine different molecular weight fractions.

The highest molecular weight fraction (> 10 000 daltons) is the least bioeliminable and the fraction in the low molecular weight (<1000 daltons) represents more thon 50 % of BDOC and chlorine demand. However the smallest molecules (< 500 daltons) seem stable and they go through the filter without significant changes neither in DOC nor in chlorine demand. As for the medium fraction (between 1000 and 10 000 daltons), it is significantly bioeliminated but this BDOC reduction is net associated with a large chlorine demand removal. On the opposite, the removal of the chlorine demand of the largest molecules (> 10 000 daltons), without any carbon elimination during incubation, suggests that these molecules undergo important structural changes under the action of biological treatment.

Dans le cadre de la rénovation de l'usine d'Ivry sur Seine qui assure l'alimentatiop en eau potable de la ville de Paris avec un débit nominal de 300 000 m³/j, une nouvelle chaîne originale de traitement a été mise en œuvre. L'originalité de cette chaîne de traitement tient au fait que l'épuration par biodégradation a été prise en compte au niveau de toutes les étapes de traitement. Cette chaîne est divisée en quatre parties : préozonation - coagulation sut filtre - filtration biologique lente sur sable et affinage par ozonation filtration sur charbon actif en grains puis désinfection finale au chlore.

Nous avons testé sur pilote l'efficacité de cette nouvelle filière pour l'élimination du carbone organique dissous biodégradable ainsi que l'influence de la préozonation pour l'efficacité de la filtration biologique. Les résultats montrent des performances remarquables de la filtration biologique lente concernant l'élimination du carbone organique biodégradable. L'ozone améliore les performances de la filtration lente, et nous avons observé un taux de traitement optimal correspondant à 0,12 mg 0₃/mg COT. Des corrélations ont été effectuées avec les paramètres globaux de dosage de la matière organique. Elles montrent que le carbone biodégradable issu des filtres biologiques est de nature différente de l'influent et nous estimons qu'il est nécessaire de privilégier une étape d'affinage final par des procédés d'adsorption sur charbon.

The city of Paris has decided to improve the Ivry/Seine plant which participates to the water supply of the city. The flow of this plant is 300 000 m³/day and SAGEP has imagined a new fine of treatment which takes in account the biodegredation at all the treatment steps. The line of treatment is divided into 4 steps : preozonation, contact coagulation, coagulation on filter, slow sand filtration and ozonation, filtration on CAC, then final disinfection with chlorine. This new line of treatment has been tested on a pilot plant and we have first verified the efficiency of this plant to remove BDOC.

The material used for the contact coagulation is biolite and we have observed a good removal of BDOC on this stop. A process of bioflocculation has been shown on this stop. Nevertheless, whatever the concentration of BDOC in the raw water, the concentration of BDOC of the effluent water of slow sand filters is always very low (0,3 mg. l^-1). We have measured also others parameters concerning organic matter.

We observed a good removal of UV absorption and fluorescence along the whole water treatment line but the ratio of the fluorescence compared to the dissolved organic carbon increases after slow sand filtration. These observations confirm what was shown previously. Secondly, we have tested the influence of preozonation on the efficiency of slow sand filtration.

Preozonation has a different efficiency depending on the nature of dissolved organic carbon in the raw water. Preozonation improves efficiency of slow sand filtration but we have observed an optimal ratio of 0,12 mg 0₃/mg TOC. If the dose of ozone is over this ratio, we observed a higher concentration of BROC in the water flowing out the slow sand filters.

In conclusion, we can say that origin of BDOC is different in the influent and effluent of slow sand filtration and we think that it is necessary to privilege a step of adsorption on GAC after slow sand filtration.

Les installations de production de la Compagnie des Eaux de banlieue (CEB) au Mont Valérien traitent l'eau de Seine en aval de Paris sur 2 filières de potabilisation comprenant pour la première (50 000 m³/J) une préozonation, une coagulation au sels d'Aluminium (Aqualenc), une décantation (super pulsator Degrémont), une filtration sur sable, une ozonation, une filtration sur charbon actif en grains (CAG) et une désinfection finale au bioxyde de chlore, et pour la deuxième, une filtration lente sur sable (80 000 m³/j) dite filtration "Chabale".

Dans le cadre du remplacement de la filière "Chabale", une unité de démonstration (8 m³/h) eomprenaut une addition de charbon actif en poudre (CAP) avant ultrafiltration sur membrane a été mise en route.

Dans cette étude, une comparaison du traitement conventionnel physico-chimique de l'usine et du nouveau procédé d'ultrafiltration a été effectuée. Pour cela, un suivi du carbone organique total et une évaluation du potentiel de reviviscence ont été réalisés en différents points des chaînes de traitement. La matière organique biodégradable (MOB) a été mesurée par la méthode Werner (1980).

Les premiers résultats montrent :

- l'élimination des MOB est comparable pour les différents procédés;

- toutefois, la nature des MOB est sensiblement affectée à chaque type de traitement (ozonation, addition de CAP, filtration sur sable ou sur CAG).

"Compagnie des Eaux de Banlieue" water facilities located at the Mont-Valérien treat the Seine river water downstream Paris. A first facility (5000 m³/day) includes the following processes : preozonation, coagulation, settling, sand filtration, postozonalion, GAC filtration and a final desinfection (CIO₂). A second one consists in a biological sand filtration (80000 m³/day). An ultrafiltration demonstration plant including a CAP addition into the recirculation loop is currently tested on a small scale (8 m³/h) to compare the conventional treatments with new ultrafiltration process.

In this study, the TOC removal as well as the biodegradable organic matter (BOM) removal are evaluated on the different processes. The BOM has been assessed by the Werner methodology (1980).

During the cool season (october-january) all the biodegradable organic matter were removed by the clarification process (preozonation + coagulation decantation + sand filtration). More than 90 % of the BOM were also removed by the ultrafiltration demonstration plant (including granular activated carbon) although the addition of preozonation slightly increases the effluent BOM concentrations and modifies its composition. 80 % of the dissolved organic compounds were removed by the preozonation + ultrafiltration + powder treatment line. This performance should be compared with the 70 % removal obtained with conventional treatments.

This study demonstrate that the combination 03 + UF + CAP can advantageously replace traditional treatment such as preozonation + coagulation clarification + ozonation + granular activated carbon + desinfection.

La mesure de la matière organique biodégradable dans l'eau est déterminée à partir de tests biologiques qui reposent sur deux concepts.

Le premier est basé sur le suivi de la croissance de souches pures ou d'une population bactérienne mixte dans un échantillon d'eau. Le maximum de croissance obtenu est converti en Carbone Organique facilement Assimilable (COA) et exprimé en µg de C eq. acétate/l en tenant compte du rendement de croissance de ces bactéries dans des solutions d'acétate de sodium.

Le second repose sur le suivi de la décroissance du Carbone Organique Dissous (COD) dans un échantillon d'eau ensemencé par une flore bactérienne indigène des eaux (flore en suspension ou flore fixée sur des particules de sable). La matière organique biadégradée est exprimée sous forme de Carbone Organique Dissous Biodégradable (CODB).

Des essais ont été réalisés sur différents types d'eau (eaux de rivière de la Seine, de l'Oise et de la Marne, eaux en cours de traitement de.potabilisation, eaux distribuées et eaux distillées) afin de mettre en évidence la relation existant entre la mesure du CODB en présence de bactéries fixées sur du sable et le maximum de croissance bactérienne enregistré dans les mêmes échantillons stérilisés puis réensemencés par des souches pures (Pseudomonas fluorescens P17, Pseudomonas fluorescens P17 + Spirillum NOX) ou par un inoculum mixte de bactéries indigènes de l'eau.

Les résultats de cette étude mettent en évidence :

- une relation entre le CODB et le maximum de croissance (Pseudomonas fluorescens P17) médiocre (r = 0,716 ; n = 28) pour des échantillons d'eau ensemencés par Pseudomonas fluorescens P17 seul (dénombrement en gélose);

- une relation entre le CODB et le maximum de croissance (Pseudomonas fluorescens P17) améliorée (r = 0,850, n = 31) pour des échantillons ensemencés simultanément avec un mélange de Pseudomonas fluorescens P17 et Spirillum NOX (dénombrement en gélose);

- une relation entre le CODB et le maximum de croissance (Spirillum NOX) très faible (r = 0,264 n = 31; corrélation non significative) pour des échantillons ensemencés simultanément avec un mélange de P17 + NOX (dénombrement en gélose);- le coefficient de corrélation entre le CODB et le COA (Pseudomonas fluorescens P17 + Spirillum NOX) est de 0.769 (n = 31) avec une équivalence de 140 µg de COA (eq. acétate) par mg de CODE lorsque P17 est utilisé isolément et 90 µg de COA (eq. acétate) par mg de CODB lorsque P17 et NOX sont utilisés simultanément;

- la relation entre le CODB et le maximum de croissance (flore naturelle mixte) est par contre très satisfaisante (r = 0,943; e = 30) lorsque les dénombrements bactériens sont effectués par microscopie en épifluorescence (coloration à l'acridine orange).

Le rendement de croissance est alors de 1,7.10⁹ cellules pour 1 mg de CODB mesuré en présence de sable biologique.

En conclusion, la mesure du CODB au moyen de bactéries fixées, originellement décrite pour évaluer l'efficacité des filières de traitement de potabilisation vis-à-vis de l'élimination de la Matière Organique Biodégradable permet aussi de prédire le potentiel de recroissance bactérienne (bactéries indigènes) de différents types d'eau.

Some attempts have been made to obtain an assessment of either the easily Assimilable Organic Carbon (AOC) or the total amount of Biodegradabte Dissolved Organic Carbon (BDOC) in drinking water.

The first approach was developed in several methods.

One of these methods consists of seeding pasteurized samples of water with pure cultures of bacteria (Pseudomonas fluorescens P17, P17 + Spirillum NOX). The growth of bacteria is monitored by a spread plate technique. AOC is expressed as equivalent amount of carbon (µg C eq. acetate/l) by using known yield coefficients of these strains in acetate or in oxalate.

In the second approach, the BDOC content of water is evaluated by the reduction of Dissolved Organic Carton (DOC) in a water sample incubated up to 30 days with suspended indigenous bacteria or 5-7 days with bacteria fixed on sand-particles.

This work was undertaken to determine the existing relationship between values of BDOC recorded by using fixed bacteria on sand and :

- the maximum growth of a pure strain of Pseudomonas fluorescens P17. Water samples (60 ml) were pasteurized and inoculated with a subculture of Pseudomonas fluorescens (initial concentration = 500 CFU/ml). The maximum growth M 20 °C ± 1 °C was recorded by a pour plate method in PCA agar alter 3-4 days of incubation.

- the maximum growth of strains P17 and NOX inoculated simultaneously in pasteurized water samples (40 ml) (500-1000 CFU/ml for each species). Each maximum growth at 20 °C ± 1 °C after seven, eight and vine days of incubation was recorded (spread plate method on R2A agar) and converted in AOC (growth constants : 4.1 10⁶ CFU per µg C for P17, 1.2 10⁷ CFU per µg C for NOX).

- the maximum growth of a mixed indigenous population of bacteria. Water samples (500 ml) were filtered (0,2 µm filter) and reinoculated with one percent of river water. The maximum growth was recorded alter 3-4 days of incubation at 20 °C ± 1 °C by microscopic epifluorescent counts (acridin orange coloration).

Comparisons were done with different types of water including river water (Seine, Oise and Marne), partially treated water (conventional treatments), fully treated water, ground water, mineral water and distilled water.

The study bas demonstrated :

- a pour correlation (r = 0.716; n = 28) between BDOC values and the maximum growth of Pseudomonas fluorescens. This observation can be explained by the limited spectrum of activity and the low affinity of Pseudomonas fluorescens for organic molecules. Under these conditions, the growth yield was 5.9 10⁸ CFU per mg C (BDOC).

- a better correlation (r = 0,850; n = 31) between BDOC and the maximum growth of P17 for water samples seeded simultaneously with P17 and NOX. Under these conditions, no correlation (r = 0.264 n = 31) was found between values of BDOC and maximum growth of NOX, demonstrating varying affinities of the NOX strain for ozonation by-products. In spite of this limit, the relation between BDOC and AOC values remained relatively good (r = 0.769; n = 31) with a factor of conversion of 1 mg BDOC for 90 µg C eq. acetate.

- a significative correlation (r = 0.943; n = 30) between values of BDOC (fixed bacteria on sand) and the maximum growth of indigenous bacteria by direct microscopic examination epifluorescent counts. The growth yield was then 1,7 10⁹ cells per mg of BDOC.

In conclusion, the rapid estimation of BDOC by the technique using indigenous bacteria fixed on sand particles can be considered as a good predictor of the potential bacteria regrowth for different types of water.

The primary objectives of this study were : 1) to document concentrations of Assimilable Organic Carbon (AOC) in a survey of a broad range of drinking waters and treatment processes; 2) compare the Colilorm Growth Response (CGR) to AOC concentrations; and 3) compare Biodegradable Dissolved Organic Carbon (BDOC) concentrations to AOC concentrations. AOC was measured with mixed cultures of Pseudomonas fluorescens strain P-17 and Spirillum sp. strain NOX. Test waters were transferred to 40-ml vials, pasteurized, inoculated, and incubated at 15°C. Colony forming units was the test parameter. CGR was performed with pasteurized test water inoculated with Enterobacter cloacae. Samples were incubated at 20°C for 5 days and response determined from colony forming units. The BDOC assay was performed in 40-ml vials, with glass fiber filtered, pasteurized test water, inoculated with the indigenous microflore from a stream, and incubated for 28 days in the dark et room temperature. The survey involved 109 samples from 79 drinking water supplies located throughout the United States and Canada, including 26 groundwater and 53 surface water sources. Utility personnel were supplied with sample bottles and instructions for sampling and pasteurtzing the test waters. Pasteurized water was sent to the Stroud Water Research Center for AOC, BDOC, and DOC analyses, and to the Risk Reduction Engineering Laboratory for the CGR assay. Densities of coliforms and heterotrophic plate count bacteria (HPC) were measured in the test waters by utility personnel. DOC concentrations ranged from 203 to 4943 µg/L. AOC concentrations ranged from 18 to 322 µg/L, or 2.4 % to 44.0 % of the DOC. High pH values in 5 test waters inhibited the growth of both AOC bioassay organisms. BDOC concentrations ranged from 1 to 1521 µg/L, or 0.4% to 52.8 % of DOC. The CGR assay indicated that 79 % of the test waters did not promote coliform growth, 7 % were strongly growth promoting, all from surface water sources, and 14 % were moderately growth promoting. No coliforms and only low densities at HPC organisms were reported by utilities for treatment plant effluents. The correlation of AOC and BDOC was significant (P≪0.01), with a correlation coefficient of r=0.594. Significant correlations were also found for AOC and DOC, and BDOC and DOC. Correlations of CGR and either AOC or BDOC were not statistically significant.

Les objectifs principaux de cette étude étaient :

1) De documenter, par une étude de large envergure, les concentrations en COA de l'eau potable, et des usines de traitement.

2) De comparer l'indice de croissance des coliformes (ICC) aux concentrations en COA.

3) De comparer les concentrations en CODE et celles de COA.

Le COA de l'eau a été mesuré avec un mélange de cultures Pseudomonas fluorescens de souche P17 et de Spirillum sp. de souche NOX. La plupart des échantillons d'eaux ont été transferrés dans des ampoules de 40 ml, stérilisés puis inoculés avec les bactéries Pseudomonas et Spirillum et incubés à 15 °C. Les unités formant colonies représentaient le paramètre de suivi.

Le test relatif à l'ICC a été réalisé avec l'eau soumise au test, préalablement stérilisée puis inoculée avec Cloacae enterobacter. Les échantillons ont été incubés à 20 °C pendant 5 jours et la croissance des coliformes mesurée par les unités formant colonies.

La mesure de CODB a été exécutée dans des ampoules de 40 ml : l'échantillon à analyser, préalablement filtré sur fibre de verre et pasteurisé, était inoculé avec une microflore indigène de rivière puis incubé pendant 28 jours à l'obscurité à température ambiante.

L'étude a porté sur 109 échantillons prélevés en 79 points d'approvisionnement en eau potable répartis sur le territoire des Etats-Unis et du Canada : 26 d'eaux souterraines, et 53 d'eaux de surface.

Des flacons de prélèvements pour échantillonner et des instructions pour prélever et pasteuriser les eaux ont été fournis à tous les techniciens.

L'eau stérilisée était envoyée à la Stroud Water Research Centre pour les analyses du COA, CODB et COD et au Risk Reduction Laboratory pour l'essai relatif à l'indice de croissance des coliformes. Les densités des bactéries coliformes et des bactéries hétérotrophes sur gélose étaient mesurés par les techniciens eux-mêmes.

Les concentrations en COD s'échelonnaient de 203 à 4943 µg/L, celles en COA de 18 à 322 µg/L (représentant ainsi de 2,4 % à 44,0 % du COD).

Les valeurs élevées du pH dans 5 échantillons d'eau ont inhibé la croissance des bactéries soumises aux deux essais biologiques (AOC ou BDOC).

Les concentrations en CODB se sont échelonnées de 1 à 1521 µg/L (soit 0,4 % à 52,8% du COD).

L'essai sur l'indice de croissance des coliformes a montré que 79 % des eaux soumises au test n'ont pas permis la croissance des coliformes alors que 7 % entraînaient une forte croissante (toutes provenant d'eaux de surface) et 14 une croissance modérée.

Les services des eaux n'ont mis en évidence aucun coliforme et seulement une faible densité de bactéries hétérotrophes dans les eaux des usines de traitement.

La corrélation COA-CODB était significative (P≪0,01) avec un coefficient de corrélation de r = 0,594.

Des corrélations significatives COA-COD et CODB-COD ont également été mises en évidence.

Par contre, les corrélations ICC-COA ou ICC-CODB n'étaient pas significatives.

La Ville de Nice bénéficie de deux ressources en eau d'excellente qualité, la Vésubie et la nappe alluviale du Var, qui se caractérisent par leur très faible teneur en matière organique biodégradable. La Compagnie Générale des Eaux, gestionnaire de son alimentation en eau potable, applique depuis sa mise au point au début du siècle le procédé de désinfection par l'ozone et distribue une eau sans ajouter de chlore.Un diagnostic complet de la qualité microbiologique et sanitaire de ce réseau non chloré et sans Carbone Organique Dissous Biodégradable (CODB) a été entrepris.Le suivi de la qualité de l'eau dans le réseau a consisté en des campagnes de prélèvements à partir de plusieurs points d'observation répartis sur l'ensemble du réseau. Ce suivi a permis de confirmer la bonne qualité de l'eau distribuée et le maintien de cette qualité tout au long de son transport dans les canalisations. Le CODB est absent sur l'ensemble des points confirmant l'absence de relargage et de contamination pendant le transport.La récupération des dépôts présents dans les canalisations n'a pas révélé de colonisation du réseau par des micro-organismes supérieurs. La quantité de biofilm présente sur les parois des canalisations a été évaluée en suivant la colonisation de pastilles de matériau immergées dans les réservoirs.Ce diagnostic complet de l'état microbiologique et sanitaire du réseau de Nice montre que l'absence de chloration n'entraîne pas de dégradation de la qualité bactériologique de l'eau et que c'est essentiellement l'absence de matière organique biodégradable qui limite la croissance bactérienne et qui contribue au maintien de la qualité de l'eau dans le réseau de distribution.

Within the more general scope of studies aiming at a better knowledge of the mechanisms responsible for biological biodegradation in water systems, it was interesting to learn the microbiological behaviour of a drinking water network supplied with water free of biodegradable organics. The case in point is the town of Nice which enjoys excellent quality water ressources, to the extent that the Compagnie Générale des Eaux, managers of the municipal water utility, were able to apply ozonation as a disinfectant when the technique first appeared at the beginning of the century, and supply chlorine free water.

The Municipal Services of the Town of Nice, the Nice Health Laboratory and the Compagnie Générale des Eaux bave therefore combined forces to carry out a study on the development of water quality in the supply network in such an animal environment. The objective is to make a complete diagnosis of the microbiological and hygienic quality of a chlorine-free network which would confirm the excellent quality of the distributed water and serve as a reference within the scope of general research on the removal of biodegradable organics for the supply of non chlorinated water.

The study consisted of monitoring three supply systems fed by three different water works :

- the Super Rimiez plant treating water from the river Vésubie in the following stages : flocculation, primary clarification, sand filtration and virucidal ozonation;

-the Jean Moreno plant : water pumped from the alluvion layers of the Var and ozonated;

-the Prairies plant : pumping and temporary chlorination of the Var aquifer with chlorine dioxyde.

In order to take seasonal variations info account, our study lasted for a whole year, with sampling campaigns every two weeks on 20 observation points along the network, and on the raw water treated in three production plants. The physico-chemical and microbiological characteristics of the water samples were analyzed.

Samples were collected at a high flow rate from fire hydrants near the observation points. The sediments were gathered in a plankton net and analyzed to detect the presence of possible animalcules.

The immersion of PVC coupons in two reservoirs, fed respectively with the two types of water, enabled the growth kinetics of fixed bacteria to be followed, and the quantifies of fixed biomass at steady state to be compared.

It was possible, by monitoring the chloride content (on average 25 mg Cl¯/l in Var water compared with 5 mg Cl¯/l in Vésubie water), to identify the precise influence of the two water resources.

Total bacteria measured by epilluorescence are not very high compared with networks in other large towns. It will be noted, however, that the figure is higher in the network supplied from the Vésubie than in those treating water from the Var aquifer. Bacterial regrowth in circulating water is minor, showing that the influence of bacteria released by the biofilm installed on the pipe walls is minimized. This biofilm is present just the same, as is shown by the results of colonization an the immersed coupons in reservoirs.

The quantity of fixed bacteria at steady state is different according to the type of water but, in both cases, it was lower than the figure obtained with water loaded with biodegradable organics. The total plate count remains low on the whole, even at end sections of the network. The presence at fecal bacteria was only observed at a few points during some of the studies and the Nice network, on the whole, is of excellent quality judged by the very few fecal contamination indicators found.

The presence of Aeromonas hydrophila was detected in very small quantities and at a few of the sampling points only.

Analyses of Dissolved Organic Carbon (on average 0.3 mgC/l) and Biodegradable Dissolved Organic Carbon (less than 0.1 mgC/l, by the minimum detection threshold method) reveal a very low concentration in organics and a total absence of BDOC on all sampling points, thus confirming the good quality of the water supplied and the tact that these is very little bacteria) remise and contamination while the water is in transit.

Examination of the sediments in water mains and at the bottom of reservoirs did not reveal the existence of higher forma of microorganisms.

This complete diagnosis of the mirobiological and health condition of the Nice water system has brought confirmation of the good quality of the water supplied throughout its transit in the water mains. The lack of chlorination dues not cause a deterioration of the bacteriological quality of the water, the sustainable quality of which is essentially linked with the absence of BDOC which restricting the growth of bacteria.

The importance of these findings on such a distinctive network as that of the Nice utility will enable this study to be used as reference for future research on the means of maintaining the quality of water in supply networks without using chlorine.
