Résumé
Cet essai examine le concept du Mal et son évolution dans la littérature et la spiritualité du judaïsme rabbinique, de l’antiquité tardive au moyen âge. Les fondements du concept typiquement rabbinique de yéçer ha-ra‘ (« mauvais instinct ») sont d’abord examinés dans la Bible hébraïque et les pseudépigraphes. Le mythe de la rébellion des anges contre Dieu – qui explique l’origine du Mal d’une manière alternative au mythe yahviste de la transgression d’Adam et Eve – est revisité dans la tradition homilétique (Pirqe de-Rabbi Eli‘ezer). Enfin, les nombreuses survivances et déclinaisons du paradigme énochique sur l’origine et la structure du Mal, ainsi que la démonologie riche et variée qui le caractérise, sont étudiées dans la mystique rabbinique de la fin de l’antiquité et du début du moyen âge (Séfer Yeçirah, Zohar et le Traité sur l’émanation gauche de Yiçḥaq ben Ya‘aqov ha-Kohen). On arriva (surtout dans le Zohar) à une conception du Mal comme inhérent à la personnalité de Dieu lui-même et finalement extériorisé, dans un acte de dividuation (au sens jungien du terme) par lequel le Mal devient « l’autre côté » de Dieu lui-même, un « contre-monde gouverné par Satan » (d’après la définition qu’en donna Gershom Scholem). Le problème du Mal est élaboré dans le judaïsme rabbinique en récupérant des mythes de différentes traditions anciennes et en les recomposant dans des cadres différents, selon de nouvelles relations réciproques.
Abstract
This essay examines the concept of Evil and its evolution in the literature and spirituality of Rabbinic Judaism from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages. The foundations of the typically rabbinic concept of yeṣer ha-ra‘ (“evil instinct”) are first examined in the Hebrew Bible and in the P”seudepigrapha. The myth of the rebellion of the angels against God – an explanation of the origin of Evil that was alternative to the Yahwist myth of Adam and Eve’s transgression – is revisited in the homiletic tradition (Pirqe de-Rabbi Eli‘ezer). Finally, the numerous survivals and declinations of the Enochic paradigm on the origin and structure of Evil, and the rich and varied demonology that characterised it, are investigated in late antique and early medieval rabbinic mysticism (Sefer Yeṣirah, Zohar, and Yiṣḥaq ben Ya‘aqov ha-Kohen’s Treatise on the Left Emanation). Evil came to be conceived (especially in the Zohar) as inherent to the personality of God himself, and finally exteriorized, in an act of authentic dividuation (in the Jungian sense of the term) through which it becomes God’s “other side,” a “counter-world ruled by Satan” (according to Gershom Scholem’s definition). The problem of Evil was elaborated in Rabbinic Judaism by retrieving myths from different ancient traditions and recomposing them in different frameworks, according to new reciprocal relationships.
